Racing game fans will want to check out Drive Beat for the MSX Turbo R computer. It is currently a work in progress and coming along quite nicely. Fans of Out Run will surely feel right at home with this racer as it is obvious Sega’s classic is an inspiration.

<h2>Taking Racing Action to a Higher Level</h2>

Racing games have been around since the early days of video games. From Astro Race and Space Race in the 1970s arcades to Night Driver on the Atari 2600, pedal to the metal has been something fans have enjoyed, right along with Pong and other early genres/titles. 

As technology improved so did the quality of the racing action. From top view to simulated 3D behind the vehicle to true 3D, racing games advanced with the hardware available.

While the MSX Turbo R is not capable of true 3D, it can simulate 3D such as Sega’s popular in arcades Super Scaler tech. That is what gives Drive Beat that “Sega look” in my opinion.

<h2>Improving on the Classics</h2>

Drive Beat looks to add a few things to the genre that is not often seen. Splits in the road allow you to choose your path rather than pausing the action and taking you to a map screen, just racing and racing it shall be.

There are hills and lots of them as well as tons of things around the screen. From roadside objects to the background, there is a lot going on here. Go ahead, look up games like Rad Racer on YouTube, there is nearly nothing going on off those roads. 

There are even night/day cycles. Nice touch.

The details matter and Drive Beat has them taken care of. This is something not often seen in these retro style racing games.

What racing game got you into the genre? For me, it was Night Driver on the Atari 2600 as my earliest but I really got into it with Super Hang-On in arcades and on Sega Genesis.
