ROMHacking.net is closing their doors effective August 1st, 2024. They are transitioning to news only for the foreseeable future but the future. The future is not guaranteed as the challenges of running such a large, popular, site is pointed out as one reason for the shuttering of many features (such as hack downloads). There is also a bit of drama behind the scenes causing even more headaches to the point the site owners/management have decided a change of course is needed.

Retro Gaming’s Repository of ROM Hacks

Go ahead, think of a site that hosted as many ROM hacks, new homebrew releases, etc as ROMHacking.net did. I will wait. Zophar’s Domain has moved into offering translations/hacks/etc and public domain ROMs, but their offerings are still quite small.
Looking around the Internet, it seems Zophar may be the best option now.
To put this into perspective, Zophar’s Domain’s Streets of Rage 2 hacks offerings contain three files. ROMHacking.net had over 200 of varying content from characters to full on total conversions of the Sega classic.
The void for gaming hacks in an easy to find collection is going to be huge.
Maybe with the partial closure of ROMHacking.net we will see Zophar’s Domain gain more traction in this area.

Like Saying Goodbye to an Old Friend

Sites like ROMHacking.net can become big parts of our lives. For anyone laughing, how would you feel if say, TikTok, Facebook, Instagram, or even YouTube closed? That is similar to what some of us are feeling about ROMHacking.net slowly stepping into the shadows of long-lost memories here.
Some downloads have already been disabled on ROMHacking.net, making this announcement even more real. If being a news repository is the only way ROMHacking.net can continue, then so be it. Some would say it is a shell of its former self, which it may be. A news site covering retro gaming is still a great asset.
Thank you for the memories, [ROMHacking.net]( https://www.romhacking.net/).
