<p>&nbsp;Underlining in HTML used to be a matter of enclosing the text in &lt;u&gt;&lt;/u&gt; tags, but this method has since been abandoned in favor of the much more versatile CSS.&nbsp;</p>

<p>&nbsp;In the olden days, the <a href="http://htmldog.com/references/html/tags/sup/"><code>sup</code></a> and <a href="http://htmldog.com/references/html/tags/sub/"><code>sub</code></a> tags were used to present something in <strong>superscript</strong> (text above the line) or <strong>subscript</strong> (text below the line) but in this modern day and age we leave presentation up to CSS. &nbsp;</p>
<p>&nbsp;(<code><strong>&lt;sup&gt;</strong></code>) specifies inline text which is to be displayed as superscript for solely typographical reasons. Superscripts are usually rendered with a raised baseline using smaller text.&nbsp;</p>
<p>&nbsp;( &lt;sub&gt;) tag defines <strong>subscript</strong> text. <strong>Subscript</strong> text appears half a character below the normal line, and is sometimes rendered in a smaller font. <strong>Subscript</strong> text can be used for chemical formulas, like H2O.&nbsp;</p>
