<strong>Cambiar de verdad, ser el cambio</strong>
El joven Dr. Barry regresó a Londres para presentar (y aprobar) su examen en el Royal College of Surgeons y en 1813 se alistó como Asistente Hospitalario de la Armada Británica, prestando sus servicios en la decisiva batalla de Waterloo, en 1815. Tras la victoria inglesa, sirvió en la India y en Sudáfrica, asentándose, alrededor de 1816, en Ciudad del Cabo. Allí se hizo amigo del Gobernador, Lord Somerset, quien, se cree, estaba al tanto de su secreto. Su nuevo protector le instaló en su residencia y pronto se iniciaron los rumores de una relación homosexual entre el joven médico y el importante funcionario. Se llegó, incluso, a crear una Comisión Real para investigar el caso que no llegó a ninguna conclusión.
Durante sus años en Sudáfrica, el Dr. Barry introdujo importantes reformas en la práctica médica. Mejoró sustancialmente el tratamiento de los enfermos, promovió medidas sanitarias que elevaron la salubridad y redujo la mortalidad en los hospitales. Se le reconoce haber practicado la primera cesárea en el continente africano en la que salvaron la vida tanto la madre como el hijo. El bebé, llamado James Barry Hertzog Munnik en su honor, llegaría a ser Primer Ministro de su país. Cabe destacar que, en esos tiempos, una cesárea era prácticamente una sentencia de muerte para la madre.

<strong>To really change, to be the change</strong><br>
Young Dr. Barry returned to London to take (and pass) his examination at the Royal College of Surgeons and in 1813 enlisted as a Hospital Assistant in the British Navy, serving at the decisive battle of Waterloo in 1815. After the British victory, he served in India and South Africa, settling, about 1816, in Cape Town. There he befriended the Governor, Lord Somerset, who, it is believed, was aware of his secret. His new protector installed him in his residence and soon rumors of a homosexual relationship, between the young doctor and the important official, began. A Royal Commission was even created to investigate the case, but it did not reach any conclusion.

During his years in South Africa, Dr. Barry introduced important reforms in medical practice. He substantially improved the treatment of the sick, promoted hygiene measures that improved sanitation and reduced mortality in hospitals. He is credited with having performed the first caesarean section on the African continent, which saved the lives of both mother and child. The baby, named James Barry Hertzog Munnik in his honor, would become Prime Minister of his country. It should be noted that, in those days, a cesarean section was practically a death sentence for the mother.

En 1828 el Dr. Barry abandona Ciudad del Cabo con destino a la Isla Mauricio. Tras prestar sus servicios allí, pasaría a Trinidad y Tobago y luego a la Isla de Santa Elena. Sirvió también en Malta, Corfu y Crimea, donde conoció, durante la guerra, a la famosa enfermera Florence Nightingale, quien afirmaría sobre Barry en una carta, tras saber de su muerte: “Yo diría que (Barry) era la criatura más endurecida que haya encontrado nunca”. Pese al desencuentro entre ellas durante sus servicios en la Guerra de Crimea, ambas mujeres son reconocidas hoy por sus aportes que cambiaron para siempre la práctica de la medicina militar y de zonas de combate y, más de siglo y medio después, siguen siendo referentes fundamentales en el área por sus innovaciones.

A pesar de toda controversia y los constantes señalamientos por su carácter, el trabajo del médico destacó siempre por sus resultados. Las condiciones sanitarias de los regimientos a su cargo eran ostensible mejores que las de otros hospitales y cuarteles, reduciendo la tasa de mortalidad entre los heridos y logrando controlar, incluso, la transmisión de enfermedades venéreas y el impacto de las epidemias.

In 1828 Dr. Barry left Cape Town and went to the Island of Mauritius. After serving there, he went on to Trinidad and Tobago and then to St. Helena Island. The sanitary conditions of the regiments under his charge were ostensibly better than those of other hospitals and barracks, reducing the mortality rate among the wounded and even managing to control the transmission of venereal diseases and the impact of epidemics.

Tras la guerra, Barry se trasladó a Canadá, donde ganó celebridad por sus mejoras a la higiene pública, la alimentación y los cuidados médicos, no solo de los soldados y sus familias, sino también de los prisioneros y los leprosos. Para el momento de su retiro, en 1864, el Doctor James Miranda Stuart Barry había alcanzado el grado más alto posible para un médico militar en el Imperio Británico: Inspector General de Hospitales del Ejército. Si no se le concedió el título de Caballero, después de cincuenta y un años de tan destacada carrera, fue porque su hoja de servicios estaba manchada con una gran cantidad de conflictos, insubordinaciones y castigos por sus constantes señalamientos a las malas prácticas de sus compañeros y superiores, su carácter fuerte e irascible y su constante necesidad de innovación.

Barry libró (y ganó) dos duelos en defensa de su honor, resultando herido en la cintura durante uno de ellos. Pese a su aguda voz y su baja estatura que, incluso con los suplementos en el calzado, se acentuaba por la talla holgada de su ropa, tenía fama de ser hiriente y de reaccionar violentamente si se le señalaba de “afeminado”. La suya fue una vida a contracorriente en la que terminó rompiendo esquemas para una sociedad que se resistía al cambio. No importaba cuán despacio pareciera moverse su tiempo, Margaret (oculta en Barry) aceleraría la llegada del porvenir; pues, con su engaño, se anticipó en medio siglo a Elizabeth Garret Anderson, quien, tras varias negativas, el pago de clases privadas y reiteradas amenazas con demandar al gremio médico y su academia, se convirtió, en 1865, en la primera mujer en licenciarse como médico de toda Gran Bretaña.

Barry fought (and won) two duels in defense of his honor, being wounded in the hip during one of them. Despite his high-pitched voice and short stature, which, even with supplements in his shoes, was accentuated by the baggy size of his clothes, he had a reputation for being hurtful and reacting violently if he was called "effeminate". His was a life against the currents in which he ended up breaking the mold for a society that was resistant to change. No matter how slowly her time seemed to move, Margaret (hidden in Barry) would accelerate the arrival of the future; for, with her deceit, she was half a century ahead of Elizabeth Garret Anderson, who, after several refusals, the payment of private lessons and repeated threats to sue the medical guild and its academy, became, in 1865, the first woman to be licensed as a physician in all of Great Britain.

Después de su jubilación, en 1864, James Barry regresó a Londres, donde se instaló hasta su muerte, el año siguiente, por disentería. Había dejado órdenes expresas de ser enterrado con la ropa que llevara puesta al morir. Pero esta última voluntad fue ignorada, por lo que tocaría a Sophía Bishop la suerte de descubrir aquella escandalosa verdad, la cual, sin embargo, mantendría oculta hasta después del entierro, intentando obtener algún dinero por mantener el secreto. Así lo cuenta el Mayor D. R. McKinnon, médico tratante de los últimos días de Barry y a quien correspondió certificar la defunción, en una carta de respuesta a George Graham (de la Oficina del Registro General), quién le interpeló por el rumor sobre el sexo del famoso médico recientemente fallecido:
 
“Señor,
He sido una persona próxima al doctor desde hace muchos años, tanto en Londres como en las Indias Occidentales, y nunca he tenido la sospecha de que el Dr. Barry fuera una mujer. Le he atendido durante sus últimas enfermedades (bronquitis y después diarrea). Una única vez, tras la muerte del Dr. Barry, en la oficina de Sir Charles McGregor, una mujer que debía realizar los últimos oficios esperaba para hablar conmigo. […] Entre otras cosas, me dijo que el Dr. Barry era una mujer, y que yo era un médico terrible por no saberlo, y que nunca se dejaría tratar por mí. Le informé que no era de mi incumbencia si el Dr. Barry era un hombre o una mujer, y que pensaba que podría no haber sido ni lo uno ni lo otro, es decir, un hombre desarrollado de manera imperfecta. Ella me dijo entonces que había examinado el cuerpo, que era una mujer perfecta y, aun más, que había señales de que había tenido un niño cuando era muy joven. Le pregunté entonces como había llegado a esa conclusión. La mujer, señalando la parte baja del estómago, me dijo ‘a partir de marcas aquí. Soy una mujer casada y madre de nueve niños, y debería saberlo.’
La mujer parecía pensar que había descubierto un importante secreto y quería dinero para guardarlo. Le informé que los parientes del Dr. Barry estaban muertos, que no había ningún secreto para mi, y que en mi opinión, el Dr. Barry era un hermafrodita. Pero si el Dr. Barry era un hombre, una mujer o un hermafrodita, lo ignoro, y poco importa porque puedo positivamente afirmar que la identidad de ese cuerpo era el de la persona que he conocido como Inspector General de Hospitales durante varios años.” (<a href =" https://mujeresconciencia.com/2017/02/28/el-medico-james-barry-o-la-sobrina-del-pintor-james-barry/ ">  Fuente </a>)

La carta de McKinnon ha servido a autores como A. K. Kubba para afirmar que Barry era, más bien, intersexual y no mujer. Pero investigaciones como la de Isobel Rae, casi cien años después de la muerte de Barry, dejan bastante claro, gracias a la desclasificación de algunos documentos conservados en secreto por la Armada Británica, que el importante médico militar era, en realidad, la sobrina del pintor James Barry; una mujer en todo sentido, que dispuso lo mejor que pudo de sus talentos para enfrentarse a las prohibiciones y dificultades de su tiempo y cuyo logro no merece ser disminuido atribuyéndole grado alguno de masculinidad.

Jeremy Dronfield, coautor junto a Michael du Preez del libro "Dr. James Barry: A Woman Ahead of Her Time" (2016), cuenta que tras la muerte de Barry (y el renacimiento de Margaret al revelarse su más importante secreto), el baúl que acompañó al prestigioso médico en sus viajes por el mundo fue vendido como una curiosidad. El nuevo dueño encontró, escondidas en un doble fondo en el interior de la tapa, imágenes de revistas de moda femenina. "Ahí, en ese santuario secreto, 'James' había pegado imágenes de trajes y sombreros, cintas y chales, zapatillas y peinados que nunca tuvo la oportunidad de lucir", señaló Dronfield. He had left express orders to be buried with the clothes he was wearing when he died. This is how Major D. R. McKinnon, Barry's attending physician during his last days and who was in charge of certifying the death, tells it in a letter in response to George Graham (from the General Register Office), who questioned him about the rumor concerning the sex of the famous doctor who recently passed away:

"Sir,
I have been close to the doctor for many years, both in London and in the West Indies, and I have never had any suspicion that Dr. Barry was a woman. I have attended him during his last illnesses (bronchitis and later diarrhea). Only once, after Dr. Barry's death, in Sir Charles McGregor's office, a woman who had to perform the last offices was waiting to speak to me. [...] Among other things, she told me that Dr. Barry was a woman, and that I was a terrible doctor for not knowing it, and that she would never allow herself to be treated by me. I informed her that it was none of my business whether Dr. Barry was a man or a woman, and that I thought he might have been neither, that is, an imperfectly developed man. She then told me that she had examined the body, that she was a perfect woman and, further, that there were signs that she had had a child when she was very young. I then asked her how she had come to that conclusion. The woman, pointing to her lower stomach, told me 'from marks here. I am a married woman and mother of nine children, and I should know.'

The woman seemed to think that she had discovered an important secret and wanted money to keep it. I informed her that Dr. Barry's relatives were dead, that there was no secret to me, and that in my opinion, Dr. Barry was a hermaphrodite. But whether Dr. Barry was a man, a woman, or a hermaphrodite, I ignore, and it matters little because I can positively affirm that the identity of that body was that of the person I have known as General Inspector of Hospitals for several years." McKinnon's letter has been used by authors such as A. K. Kubba to affirm that Barry was, in fact, an intersexual and not a woman. But studies such as that of Isobel Rae, almost a hundred years after Barry's death, make it quite clear, thanks to the declassification of some documents kept secret by the British Navy, that the important military doctor was, in fact, the niece of the painter James Barry; a woman in every sense, who made the best use of her talents to face the prohibitions and difficulties of her time and whose achievement does not deserve to be diminished by attributing any degree of masculinity to her.

Jeremy Dronfield, co-author with Michael du Preez of the book "Dr. James Barry: A Woman Ahead of Her Time" (2016), tells how after Barry's death (and Margaret's rebirth when her most important secret was revealed), the trunk that accompanied the prestigious doctor on his travels around the world was sold as a curiosity. The new owner found, hidden in a double bottom inside the lid, images from women's fashion magazines. "There, in that secret sanctuary, 'James' had pasted images of suits and hats, ribbons and shawls, slippers and hairstyles that he never had a chance to wear," Dronfield remarked. <strong>Un legado perdurable que derrotó al silencio</strong>
El duo británico Gilmore & Roberts dedica a nuestra silenciada heroína su tema <em>Dr. James</em>. Su canción dice: “Aquí yace el cuerpo de un hombre de alto rango / Un hombre de alto rango con una piedra tan clara / Enterrado en un cementerio en Kensal Green / En el reinado de Victoria (…) Dígame su secreto, Doctor James / No eres una figura conocida en nuestra historia / Parece que algunos incluso han oído su nombre / Las historias de tu éxito se convierten en un misterio / Así que dime tu secreto…”.

La canción hace clara referencia al empeño de las Fuerzas Armadas inglesas en mantener oficialmente la identidad masculina del Dr. James Barry, cuando desde poco después de su muerte se reveló el secreto de su engaño, según demuestran cartas y documentos de la época, incluso diarios irlandeses de algunos años después. Pero en lugar de reconocer y honrar a la mujer que tuvo que engañarlos para liderar los cambios que urgían en su práctica médica, decidieron imponer un embargo sobre el historial militar del Dr. James Barry por 100 años, procurando mantener en la oscuridad aquello que hoy es inocultable. Por eso en la lápida del cementerio de Kensal Green se sigue leyendo escuetamente: “Dr. James Barry. Inspector General de Hospitales del Ejército”.

Lo cierto es que el legado de Margaret y su famoso alter ego no está solo en los cambios que se dieron en el campo de la medicina gracias a sus innovaciones y buenas prácticas, ni en los libros, obras de teatro, incluso canciones que se hicieron sobre ella. Su legado está también en los logros y aportes de cada mujer que ejerce hoy la medicina, pues, al igual que Henriette Faver, quien también tuvo que disfrazarse de hombre para convertirse en la primera mujer en ejercer la medicina en América Latina, voluntades como la suya son las que abren camino para que el futuro de libertad y equidad que soñamos se acerque un poco más al presente.
