We have all encountered toxic relationships that drain our lives, reaching the point where the overwhelm becomes suffocating, making the decision to stop abruptly. However, we feel that our actions have repercussions of greater and corrosive consequences, making us prey to guilt until we manage to get rid of it.

In this new installment of Garland, where he coarsely delves into human psychology, we will find a symbolic and disturbing paradise, where we will witness the darker side of the feelings that torture us, turning us into frightened and defenseless lambs. Men' is not a simple film of terror and suspense, it contains a mystery that must be deciphered with a critical eye. It is disturbing and leaves you with a certain sense of wonder throughout the film. Its function is to make you uncomfortable and, in addition, to make you think about what you have just seen.

Todos nos hemos topado con relaciones tóxicas que drenan nuestras vidas, llegando al punto en que el atosigamiento se vuelve sofocante, tomando la decisión de pararlo abruptamente. Sin embargo, sentimos que nuestras acciones repercuten en consecuencias mayores y corrosivas, convirtiéndonos en presa de la culpa hasta que logremos deshacernos de ella.

En esta nueva entrega de Garland, donde se adentra toscamente en la psicología humana, nos encontraremos un paraíso simbólico y perturbador, donde presenciaremos el lado más oscuro de los sentimientos que nos torturan, convirtiéndonos en corderos asustadizos e indefensos. ‘Men’, no es una película simple de terror y suspenso, contiene un misterio que debe ser descifrado con ojo crítico. Es perturbadora y te deja una cierta sensación de estupor a lo largo del filme. Su función es incomodarte y, además, hacerte pensar en lo que acabas de ver.

As I hinted before, the director and screenwriter is Alex Garland, creator of 'Ex Machina (2014)' and 'Annihilation (2018)', two of my favorite movies in my personal sci-fi top. Garland, is not popular for making stories with a monotonous line and a simple plot, his methodology starts from more transcendental aspects such as human personality, mythology, the course of life, symbolism and metaphor. The interpretations of his works can be infinite and, at the same time, may only require one explanation. 

On the music we have Geoff Barrow and Ben Salisbury, who created a compelling element that remained powerful throughout the atmosphere of the film. The cinematography was done by Rob Hardy, who captivated me with those wide shots, full of bright colors in some scenes, and dull in others, taking into account the tension of the situation. 

As starring actress we have Jessie Buckley, a very excellent actress, Oscar winner, I recently did a [review](https://peakd.com/hive-166847/@universoperdido/eng-en-esp-im-thinking-of-ending-things-2020-a-rare-and-spectacular-jewel) of a movie she starred in two years ago, which is also very good and interesting, I highly recommend it. Alongside her was the very great Rory Kinnear, a multiple award winner and a very versatile actor, in fact, in this film, he has demonstrated that versatility by playing several roles with different attitudes. Then we have Paapa Essiedu and Gayle Rankin, as supporting cast in this story.

The production companies in charge of the shooting and distribution of this film were A24 and Entertainment Film Distributors, the former from the United States and the latter from Great Britain. This film has a running time of 100 minutes and was released on May 20 of this year.

Como lo he insinuado antes, el director y guionista es Alex Garland, creador de ‘Ex Machina (2014)’ y ‘Annihilation (2018)’, dos de mis películas preferidas en mi top personal de ciencia ficción. Garland, no es popular por hacer historias con un lineamiento monótono y una trama simple, su metodología parte de aspectos más trascendentales como la personalidad humana, la mitología, el curso de la vida, el simbolismo y la metáfora. Las interpretaciones a sus obras pueden ser infinitas y, a la vez, pueden solo requerir una explicación. 

En la música tenemos a Geoff Barrow y Ben Salisbury, quienes crearon un elemento convincente que se mantuvo poderoso en toda la atmosfera de la película. La fotografía fue realizada por Rob Hardy, quien me cautivó con esas tomas amplias, repletas de colores brillantes en algunas escenas, y opacos en otras, tomando en cuenta la tensión de la situación. 

Como actriz estelar tenemos a Jessie Buckley, una excelentísima actriz, ganadora del Oscar, recientemente hice una [reseña](https://peakd.com/hive-166847/@universoperdido/eng-esp-im-thinking-of-ending-things-2020-a-rare-and-spectacular-jewel) de una película que protagonizó hace dos años, y que también es muy buena e interesante, la recomiendo mucho. Junto a ella se encontraba el grandísimo Rory Kinnear, ganador de múltiples premios y un actor muy versátil, de hecho, en esta película, ha demostrado esa versatilidad interpretando varios papeles con diferentes actitudes. Luego tenemos a Paapa Essiedu y a Gayle Rankin, como reparto secundario en esta historia.

Las empresas productoras que se encargaron del rodaje y distribución de esta película fueron la A24 y Entertainment Film Distributors, la primera de Estados Unidos y la segunda de Gran Bretaña. Esta película tiene una duración de 100 minutos y fue estrenada el 20 de mayo de este año.

<center><h2>Plot and opinion</h2></center>

Knowing what another Garland movie was about, I searched all over the web until I finally found it, it was a bit difficult, but worth it. The story is about a woman named Harper, who decides to take a two-week respite in a house in the countryside away from the city near a town. Her goal was to heal from her torments after witnessing the suicide of her husband, with whom she had a toxic relationship and with whom she did not end on good terms. 

Harper has agonizing memories about the last argument she had with her husband, where she feels a terrible guilt eating away at her and thinks it was because of her that he made the decision to commit suicide. The feeling of guilt becomes a stalker that haunts her, causes her pain and also does not allow her to continue with her life, even in the place she chose to heal. There she meets Geoffrey, the landlord of the place, a particularly strange man at first glance, who makes mention of the apple tree in the yard of the house.

The theme of the woman and the apple is a very noticeable symbolism that as a viewer I saw very evident. According to Judeo-Christian mythology, Eve; Adam's second wife, ate of the forbidden fruit of the tree of knowledge, and then tempted Adam to also eat of it, which was an apple. God, seeing such action, punished mankind and expelled Adam and Eve from the Garden of Eden, it is for this reason, that the woman is blamed for all the evils of the world.

Taking this explanation into account, we will understand the whole context of the film. Harper feels guilty because her husband has committed suicide, since she told him she wanted a divorce, to which he replies, in a heated argument that if she leaves him, he will kill himself, and that whatever happens to him, she is responsible for it. That terrible burden that Harper's husband leaves on her, torments her and does not let her live afterwards. That contempt, aversion and condemnation towards women, gives rise to misogyny, where society creates illogical justifications that increase the hatred towards women. Garland played quite well with symbolism to make us see that misogyny is a monstrous being that attempts against the life of the female sex, stalking it as many times as it wants and making it less than it is.

Within the film, there will also appear other figures, who also fostered machismo or are part of it, as well as a corporeal representation of the pain that Harper feels and does not leave her alone. In the first instance, we see that Harper is pursued by a naked man coming from the forest, who stalks and pursues her to the cottage where she is rented. This disturbing individual could represent Harper's guilt, the one that always haunts her and torments her with horrible memories of that fateful day.

Before I continue, I should also mention about the behavior of the men in the village near the cottage where Harper is staying. They have a strange behavior, plus, their thoughts and opinions further the pain of the protagonist's guilt, as if they are all in cahoots to make her feel bad about her husband's death.

Having said this, throughout the film, Harper will be confronted with the most representative figures of misogyny. We have first the figure of the Christian priest, representative of the religion, who, as I have explained above, is the maximum justification of aversion towards women, since in this religion the female gender is blamed for the evils of the world, for leading men towards the wrong path and tempting them towards sin. 

Then we have the figure of the child, the next generation of our species, who is educated and indoctrinated in a macho culture, where women must do what men say or they will feel anger and rage towards them. Then we have the figure of the policeman, who represents the law, which, during the history of mankind has belittled women giving more privilege to men, today, of course that has changed a lot, but previously the word of a woman was not taken into account in society, being subjected to a lawless world for them.

Within all these representations, we have the conjugation of a macho man who does not allow a woman to defend herself, or who thinks that a divorced woman has less value than a married woman. Under this last premise plays chivalry, which is another macho gesture disguised as affability, because it makes women think that they need a man to feel "protected", leaving aside the struggle of a world that seeks gender equality.

In the last scenes of this film, in its third act, I was able to see these representations in a much more disturbing way, flagging all these details that I mentioned above, each one becoming a stalker for the protagonist, discovering as well, that Harper's husband had in his personality each one of these traits, so our protagonist had to face again each one of them in her horrible healing process.

<center><h2>Trama y opinión</h2></center>

Al saber de qué se trataba de otra película de Garland, estuve buscándola por toda la web hasta que finalmente la encontré, fue algo difícil, pero valió la pena. La historia trata sobre una mujer llamada Harper, quien decide tomarse un respiro de dos semanas en una casa en el campo alejado de la ciudad cercano a un pueblo. Su objetivo era sanarse de sus tormentos después de presenciar el suicidio de su esposo, con el cual tenía una relación tóxica y con el que no terminó en buenos términos. 

Harper tiene recuerdos agónicos sobre la última discusión que tuvo con su marido, en donde siente una terrible culpa que la corroe y piensa que fue por ella que él tomó la decisión de suicidarse. El sentimiento de culpa se convierte en un acechador que la persigue, le causa dolor y además no le permite continuar con su vida, incluso en el lugar que ella eligió para sanar. Allí conoce a Geoffrey, el casero del lugar, un hombre particularmente extraño a primera instancia, el cual hace mención del árbol de manzanas que se encuentra en el patio de la casa.

El tema de la mujer y la manzana, es un simbolismo bastante notorio que como espectador vi muy evidente. Según la mitología judeo-cristiana, Eva; segunda mujer de Adán, comió del fruto prohibido del árbol del conocimiento, y luego tentó a Adán para que también comiera de este, el cual era una manzana. Dios, al ver tal acción, castigó a la humanidad y expulsó a Adán y Eva del Jardín del Edén, es por esta razón, que se culpa a la mujer de todos los males del mundo.

Tomando en cuenta esta explicación, entenderemos todo el contexto de la película. Harper se siente culpable porque su esposo se haya suicidado, ya que ella le dijo que se quería divorciar, a lo que este le contesta, en una acalorada discusión que, si ella lo deja, él se iba a matar, y que cualquier cosa que le ocurriera, la responsabilizaba a ella. Esa terrible carga que el esposo de Harper deja sobre ella, la atormenta y no la deja vivir después. Ese desprecio, aversión y condena hacia la mujer, da brazo a la misoginia, en donde la sociedad crea justificaciones ilógicas donde incrementan el odio hacia la mujer. Garland jugó bastante bien con el simbolismo para hacernos ver que la misoginia es un ser monstruoso que atenta contra la vida del sexo femenino, acechándolo cuantas veces quiera y hacerlo menos de lo que es.

Dentro de la película, también van a parecer otras figuras, quienes también fomentaron el machismo o son parte de él, además de una representación corpórea del dolor que siente Harper y no la deja en paz. En primera instancia, vemos que Harper es perseguida por un hombre desnudo proveniente del bosque, este la acecha y la persigue hasta la casa de campo donde ella se encuentra alquilada. Este individuo tan perturbador, podría representar a la culpa de Harper, aquella que siempre la persigue y la atormenta con horribles recuerdos sobre ese fatídico día.

Antes de continuar, también debo mencionar sobre el comportamiento de los hombres del pueblo, cerca de la casa de campo donde se hospeda Harper. Tienen un comportamiento extraño, además de que, sus pensamientos y opiniones fomentan el dolor de la culpa de la protagonista, como si todos estuvieran confabulados en hacerla sentir mal por la muerte de su marido.

Después de haber dicho esto, a lo largo de la película, Harper se enfrentará a las figuras más representativas de la misoginia. Tenemos primero la figura del sacerdote cristiano, representante de la religión, quien, como he explicado anteriormente, es el máximo justificativo de aversión hacia la mujer, ya que en esta religión se culpa al género femenino de los males del mundo, de llevar al hombre hacia el camino incorrecto y tentarlo hacia el pecado. 

Luego tenemos la figura del niño, la próxima generación de nuestra especie, quien es educado y adoctrinado en una cultura machista, donde las mujeres deben de hacer lo que el hombre dice o sentirán enfado e ira hacia ellas. Después tenemos la figura del policía, quien representa a la ley, la cual, durante la historia de la humanidad ha menospreciado a la mujer dándole más privilegio al hombre, hoy en día, por supuesto eso ha cambiado mucho, pero anteriormente la palabra de una mujer no era tomada en cuenta en la sociedad, siendo sometidas a un mundo sin ley para ellas.

Dentro de todas estas representaciones, tenemos la conjugación de un hombre machista que no permite que una mujer se defienda sola, o que piense que una mujer divorciada tenga menos valor que una mujer casada. Bajo esta última premisa juega la caballerosidad, la cual es otro gesto machista disfrazado de afabilidad, pues hace pensar a las mujeres que requieren de un hombre para sentirse “protegidas”, dejando a un lado la lucha de un mundo que busca la igualdad de género.

En las últimas escenas de esta película, en su tercer acto, pude ver estas representaciones de una manera mucho más perturbadora, abanderando todos estos detalles que he mencionado anteriormente, convirtiéndose cada uno en un acechador para la protagonista, descubriendo así mismo, que el esposo de Harper tenía en su personalidad cada uno de estos rasgos, por lo que nuestra protagonista debía enfrentar nuevamente a cada uno ellos en su horrible proceso de sanación.

Alex Garland, in an interview, said that 'Men' could be interpreted in many ways, since the film was open to all kinds of points of view. From mine, I saw how the director and creator made a masterful sequence of symbolisms and representations to give us an understanding of the social failures that exist in many macho cultures, where women still feel stalked, belittled and tormented by certain things that men impose. In radical Muslim countries, we can see this aversion and subjugation of women in a brutal and contemptuous way. 

The nuances with which it plays made me feel uncomfortable, the performances are really spectacular, the same manipulate you so that you do not stop watching. The photographic approaches and the beautiful scenery, are slowly demonstrating a sepulchral paradigm, which then will lead us to a disturbing scenario, where darkness will be the main element for the terrifying events.

It has truly been one of the best made representative films of the horror genre that I have seen this year, and all from the intelligent mind of Garland. If you are looking for something to entertain and think about for a while, I suggest you look it up and watch it.

Alex Garland, en una entrevista, dijo que ‘Men’ podía ser interpretada de muchas maneras, ya que la película estaba abierta a todo tipo de puntos de vista. Desde el mío, vi como el director y creador hizo una magistral secuencia de simbolismos y representaciones para darnos a entender sobre las fallas sociales que existen en muchas culturas machistas, en donde la mujer se siente acechada, menospreciada y atormentada todavía por ciertas cosas que los hombres imponen. En los países musulmanes radicales, podemos ver esta aversión y subyugación hacia la mujer de una manera brutal y desdeñable. 

Los matices con los que juega me hicieron sentir incómodo, las actuaciones de verdad son espectaculares, las mismas te manipulan para que no dejes de verlas. Los enfoques fotográficos y el paisaje hermoso, van demostrando lentamente un paradigma sepulcral, que luego nos va a llevando a un escenario perturbador, en donde la oscuridad será el elemento principal para los terroríficos sucesos.

De verdad que ha sido una de las películas representativas del género de terror mejor bien hechas que he visto este año, y todo desde la mente inteligente de Garland. Si buscas algo en que entretenerte y pensar un rato, te sugiero que la busques y la veas.
