PRIMERA PARTE

PART ONE

Only superiority can confront superiority, that is the thought that was bestowed upon me in my upbringing and that is what I clung to. The threads of destiny wanted me to belong to a noble lineage, privileged by an ambitious and hostile court. This for me was not a bad thing, on the contrary, I was brought up to confront the weeds of an envy that can be captivating. The ways of this world are full of setbacks, and you have to be smart enough to evade the obstacles that life and your enemies give you.

I used to go about in plan looking for the best way to position myself in a higher grade than the one I was in, although that did not guarantee me any security, at least I had the consolation that I had surpassed my despicable relatives. I lived in a castle, granted to me by His Majesty, having earned his valuable trust. My wife belonged to the royal lineage; as ambitious as I was, her goals and mine were intertwined, for we both wanted the crown. My children were pretentious and intelligent, we trained in them an imposing sense of shrewdness in the face of the aberrant situations of the world.

I could almost perceive the end of my path, but it was far away, as I was threatened by greedy men who sought the same goal. Sometimes at night I would subsume myself in thought. Long worries drilled my head and I found no ideas from the stars. At the end of my reflection, I had to settle for the hope that fate would give me the chance again, but when? I know I won't last forever and time was passing too quickly.

I felt that I had to agree to stay like this until death came for me in its sacred work, and never achieve my goal. I decided to put an end to those inconformities and move on. One dull day at court; where we nobles are invited to discuss certain topics, the declining health of His Majesty was discussed, as well as the succession; for the older prince had gone to the Crusades and the younger was an idiot who could not keep his tongue inside his mouth.

The courtiers were undecided, for, they did not want to leave the crown in the hands of the nobles, not even in the hands of the Alabasters; close relatives of the royal house. The wife of the head of that family was pregnant, but it was not yet known whether the result would be a boy or a girl; if it was a boy, my chances of ascending to the crown would be almost nil, and besides, I was still waiting for the King's eldest son.

Hopeless, I decided not to take the discussion too seriously, and although I was inwardly frustrated, I had to resign myself to remain a noble court servant for the rest of my days. That same afternoon, I returned home and locked myself in the library of my castle.
I placed my body in my heavy chair to ponder, I noticed a sealed white envelope on the floor. It looked old and worn, and when I opened it, I discovered that it contained a deck of cards with the symbol of a lady with swords, along with another huge piece of paper with a map drawn on it. Whoever sent me that, knew perfectly well about my cartographic knowledge, and that I could understand where I would go if I followed his indications.

There was another piece of paper with some words written on it, which spoke about my desire to obtain the crown and be more powerful than I am. My frustration of that morning had turned into desperation, wanting to believe that what this person said on this paper was real, but I had to control myself, because I could not fall into miserable scams. Disbelieving, I decided to put the letter aside and go back to my business, however, an interesting nugget irritated me from the inside; like a strange and irremediable tingling that pushed towards curiosity.

Although I was not entirely gullible, that same afternoon I followed the clues indicated in the letter and mounted my steed, heading for the nearest village, until I reached a house farther away than the rest. There, among the facade, I found the lady with swords drawn on the door. When I knocked, I was greeted by an old man, looking very sibylline with a long white beard.

-You, sir, are the first person to arrive, please come in.

I didn't want to ask, and I went into the small place which looked like an ordinary hut.

-Were you the one who sent me this? -I asked him to get to the point.

-That's right," he replied, -I didn't think you would accept it. Your ambition must be greater than I thought.

-What kind of a joke is this? Are you a sorcerer? I'm going to denounce you to the Church!

-If he does, he'll never become king. I can help you with that, sir.

-You? -I gasped in mockery- And how can an old villain help me obtain something that is impossible for a nobleman like me?

-How about a little test? This very night, the news will come that the King's son has died in battle. As foreseen, the nobles will fight a war of succession, and you will return here to help him get what he wants.

-Of course! Old witch! Sibylline charlatan! I feel sorry for you. I won't denounce you to the Holy Office for your insanity, but I will stop listening to your deceitful words. I'll come again? Yes, of course! You'd better pray that I won't come back to my guards for this insult.

I withdrew in annoyance and forgot the matter until evening. Whereupon the castle alarms sounded and the court signboard brought important news. A communiqué from the Holy Land, proclaimed that the King's son had been killed by an infidel arrow.

I could not believe it at the time. I saw that the people of the castle were in an uproar, running from one side to another, while I, petrified and not knowing what to think, ran to my office, picked up the card again that contained the deck of the lady of spades and took a steed into the cold night, looking for the surprises that fate had in store for me.

Ask informed soldiers in the American military what their oath is and tell them about the day you asked me why. Nobody has I guess. Maybe someone told ill informed soldiers they cant protect America from military leaders in control with ill intent. How do we protect locked up soldiers from telling the truth?
