My relationship with anime has been more distanced because I have subsumed myself more in readings than series and movies, but gradually I am changing that, because I want to explore new environments, both written and visual. When I saw that a Japanese animated horror craze was released, I knew I couldn't miss this piece and its content, which exposes a universe as sinister as the one I sometimes imagine in my head. 

I had seen beforehand, this macabre, bloody, and demented art posted by fans on social networks, but I didn't know exactly what it was about until I started to do some research. My ideas flew like balloons with disturbing faces, and I peered more into this world of madness that penetrates the common and molds it to its convenience.

Mi relación con el anime ha estado más distanciada, debido a que me he subsumido más en lecturas que series y películas, pero paulatinamente voy cambiando eso, pues quiero explorar nuevos entornos, tanto escritos como visuales. Cuando vi que se estrenó una locura de terror japonés animada, supe que no podía perderme de esta pieza y su contenido, que expone un universo tan siniestro como el que a veces imagino en mi cabeza. 

Había visto con antelación, este arte macabro, sangriento y demente publicado por fanáticos en las redes sociales, no sabía con exactitud de qué se trataba hasta que me puse a investigar un poco. Mis ideas volaron como aquellos globos con caras perturbadoras, y me asomé más a este mundo de locuras que penetran en lo común y lo moldean a su conveniencia.

**Junji Ito Maniac: Japanese Tales of the Macabre** is an animated adaptation released on Netflix this year. It is based on the works of mangaka Junji Ito; considered one of the best horror artists in Japan, as his works have even transcended to anime on several occasions. The direction of the animated anthology was made by *Shinobu Tagashira* and the script was by *Kaoru Sawada*, them, in the musical part was *Yuki Hayashi*, and the company that produced the work was *Studio DEEN*. 

In these adaptations, we will delve into the universe of horror artist Junji Ito, dabbling in the hilarious follies that look at us with huge eyes and try to make us uncomfortable or, in the worst case, try to destroy us. The first season has a compendium of 20 stories distributed mostly in the same chapter, perhaps to maintain a stipulated period. 

The stories presented here are not only loaded with wild, unhinged, and disgusting terror, but we will also find humor, romance, vigilante revenge; some pleasant sadism, and some disturbing things that make this connection of the strange with the common, maintain a strong and spirited link that will escalate until it gives us the surprise.

**Junji Ito Maniac: Japanese Tales of the Macabre** es una adaptación animada lanzada en Netflix este mismo año. Está basada en las obras del mangaka Junji Ito; considerado uno de los mejores artistas del terror en Japón, pues sus obras han transcendido incluso al anime en varias ocasiones. La dirección de la antología animada fue realizada por *Shinobu Tagashira* y el guion por *Kaoru Sawada*, junto a ellos, en la parte musical estuvo *Yuki Hayashi*, y la empresa que produjo la obra fue *Studio DEEN*. 

En estas adaptaciones, nos adentraremos en el universo del artista del horror Junji Ito, incursionando en las hilarantes locuras que nos miran con ojos enormes y tratan de incomodarnos o, en el peor de los casos, intentar destruirnos. La primera temporada posee un compendio de 20 relatos distribuidos en su mayoría en un mismo capítulo; esto quizás para mantener un periodo de tiempo ya estipulado.

 

Las historias que aquí se presentan, no solo están cargadas de terror salvaje, desquiciado y degollador, sino que también encontraremos humor, romance, venganza justiciera; algo de sadismo placentero y algunas cosas perturbadoras que hacen que esa conexión de lo extraño con lo común, mantenga un fuerte vínculo brioso que va a escalando hasta darnos el zarpazo de su sorpresa.

Although the stories were good, I wasn't completely surprised; perhaps it was the adaptation that didn't perfectly capture the scary and disturbing essence of the manga. However, with all of them, I was not the same, however, I was a little disappointed with the first story, **The strange Hikizuri brothers**, which failed to make me feel much, unlike the manga which is quite uncomfortable to read with its black and white colors. 

This is one thing to highlight, perhaps the use of colors was not the most appropriate, and perhaps if it had been more exaggerated in terms of textures and contours, the anime might have been more impressive. And this is a very important element since Junji Ito's works transcended thanks to his terrifying art; showing us things with extreme details, the horrifying and infernal side of the human being. 

In the next chapter, we have two different stories: **The Story of the Mysterious Tunnel** and **The Ice Cream Bus**, these two tales I found very good, the first one with that strong supernatural touch, and the second one convey that weirdness with a spark of frightening comedy. It was like a good taste in my mouth after the bitterness the first story left me with.

Aunque los relatos estaban buenos, no me sorprendieron del todo; quizás fue la adaptación que no captó a la perfección la esencia temible e inquietante de los mangas. No obstante, con todos no me pasó igual, sin embargo, quedé un poco decepcionado con el primer relato, **Los extraños hermanos Hikizuri**, que no logró hacerme sentir mucho, a diferencia del manga que es bastante incómodo de leer con sus colores en blanco y negro. 

Esta es una cosa a resaltar, quizás el uso de colores no fue lo más indicado, tal vez si se hubiera exagerado más en cuanto a texturas y contornos, el anime tal vez hubiera quedado más impresionante. Y es que esto es un elemento muy importante, pues las obras de Junji Ito trascendieron gracias a su arte terrorífico; mostrándonos cosas con extremos detalles, el lado horripilante e infernal del ser humano. 

Como siguiente capítulo, tenemos dos historias diferentes: **La historia del túnel misterioso** y **El autobús de los helados**, estos dos cuentos me parecieron muy buenos, el primero con ese toque fuerte sobrenatural y el segundo transmite esa rareza con una chispa de comedia espantosa. Fue como un buen sabor de boca después de la amargura que me dejó la primera historian.

In the next chapter, (and it is one of my favorite stories in this compendium), we have **The Hanging Balloons**, a lot of terror, and a lot of humor, with that irony referring to the unknown and its consequences on us. This story made me think of an alien invasion that was brewing until it took over an entire city, but in this case, we put a much more disturbing undertone in the passage. 

After this story, it is very difficult to contemplate good adaptations. Some that are humorous, I didn't find so funny, and others that should capture the agony of fear more strongly, failed to achieve their task, but we can highlight truly good stories such as **The City of Graves**, **Long Hair in the Attic**, **Long Hair in the Attic**, **Layers of Terror**, **Tomie's Picture**, **The Whispering Woman**, **Headless Sculptures** and **Soichi's Pet**. I was disappointed that **Uzumaki** didn't appear, but hey, maybe they'll bring it out for another compendium of adaptations. 

Despite its incomplete structure to convey the same quality of Ito's works, in my opinion, the adaptations were decent. I've seen opinions from people knowledgeable and faithful to the manga, and I can understand their disappointments about the Netflix series, but you can't expect one person's work to look the same as another's, that's up to the director's perception.

En el siguiente capítulo, (y es una de mis historias favoritas de este compendio), tenemos a **Los globos colgantes**, mucho terror y mucho humor, con esa ironía referente a lo desconocido y sus consecuencias sobre nosotros. Este relato me hizo pensar en una invasión alienígena que se fue gestando hasta apoderarse de una ciudad entera, pero en este caso, colocamos un trasfondo mucho más inquietante en el paso. 

Después de este relato, es muy difícil contemplar buenas adaptaciones. Algunas que son de humor, no me parecieron tan graciosas, y otras que deberían plasmar la agonía del miedo con más fuerza, no lograron su cometido, pero podemos resaltar relatos verdaderamente buenos como **La ciudad de las tumbas**, **Cabello largo en el ático**, **Capas de terror**, **La foto de Tomie**, **La mujer susurrante**, **Esculturas sin cabeza** y **La mascota de Soichi**. Quedé decepcionado porque no apareció el de **Uzumaki**, pero bueno, quizás lo saquen para otro compendio de adaptaciones. 

A pesar de su incompleta estructura de transmitir la misma calidad de las obras de Ito, a mi modo de ver las adaptaciones quedaron decentes. He visto opiniones de personas realmente conocedoras y fieles al manga, y puedo entender sus decepciones sobre la serie de Netflix, pero no se puede esperar que el trabajo de una persona quede igual al de otro, eso es a percepción del director.

There are many film adaptations of novels and short stories that did not even make noise, but there are others that have even managed to surpass the original work; for example the case of **Gone with the Wind (1939)**, a film adapted from the famous novel by *Margaret Mitchell*, and so there are other adaptations that are jewels in the art, not many, but they do exist.

 

We can't blame a director for failing to create an adaptation that exceeds expectations, but we can blame him for not producing a work that is at least decent and digestible.

 

Having said that, I would like to conclude that I have enjoyed this series of Japanese stories; maybe 60/40, they are truly inspiring and good. I maintain that the use of colors and the lack of exaggeration in the outlines and strokes of the characters did not help much to let us see that universe of decapitations with more amazement. With all this, I think that those of us who have seen the anthology, witnessed a sketch nothing more; perhaps (and I hope I'm right), in the next season we will see more than decent adaptations.

Hay muchas adaptaciones cinematográficas de novelas y cuentos cortos que no llegaron ni hacer ruido, pero hay otras que han hasta logrado superar a la obra original; como por ejemplo el caso de **Gone with the Wind (1939)**, película adaptada de la famosa novela de *Margaret Mitchell*, y así hay otras adaptaciones que son joyas en el arte, no son muchas, pero si existen.

 

No podemos culpar que un director falle en crear una adaptación que supere las expectativas, pero sí podemos culparlo por no elaborar una obra por lo menos decente y que se digiera bien.

 

Luego de haber dicho esto, me gustaría concluir que he disfrutado esta serie de relatos japoneses; tal vez un 60/40, son verdaderamente inspiradores y buenos. Mantengo que el uso de colores y la falta de exageración en los contornos y trazos de los personajes, no ayudó mucho para dejar ver ese universo de decapitaciones con más asombro. Con todo esto, pienso que los que hemos visto la antología, presenciamos un esbozo nada más; quizás (y espero estar en lo correcto), en la siguiente temporada veremos adaptaciones más allá de lo decente.
