Telegram has introduced a reward system to allow public channel owners with substantial subscribers to earn 50% of the revenue from advertisements (ads) shown in their channels. The rewards would be earned in Toncoin (TON), being the project’s native cryptocurrency and is believed o be one of the the most generous reward systems in the history of social media. 

This development was [announced](https://telegram.org/blog/monetization-for-channels) on Sunday, March 31, 2024 on Telegram's blog. However, there are conditions to be met before earning from the reward system. Public channels must have at least 1,000 subscribers to be eligible.

Pavel Durov, the founder and CEO of Telegram, unveiled the plan to share ad revenue with Telegram channel owners earlier in February 2024 during the announcement of the launch of the Telegram Ad Platform.

After two months, April welcomes Telegram users and channel owners to the new wave of earning on the messaging platform. Telegram ads are shown only in large public channels. They never appear in a user's chats, chat list, or other interfaces.

The Team has also mentioned that Telegram ads are not based on user data, but depend only on the channel in which they appear – and they directly benefit channel owners. When creating a Telegram ad, a user can choose the exact channels where they want it to appear, so they can have full control over their context.

Telegram has also provided options for Telegram Premium subscription for users who choose to turn off ads, while also having access to dozens of exclusive features, including the new Telegram Business features.


Users can create ads on Telegram with Toncoins – a cryptocurrency powered by the TON Blockchain. Any user can also promote their bot or channel – with budgets as low as a handful of Toncoins. In reaction to the announcement, the price of TON crypto has increased from $2.51 on Feb. 29 to $5.30 on April 1, according to Cointelegraph Markets Pro and TradingView. That is over 111% in profits to early bird buyers of the TON coin.

It is amazing how social media and messaging platforms are seamlessly opening up crypto access to their users, thereby creating use cases for blockchain technology. The director of investments at Ton Foundation, Justin Hyun, revealed Ton Foundation's plans to bring 500 million people on-chain by 2028 using simple initial use cases where users aren’t necessarily aware of the underlying blockchain interaction. 

He further pitched that the blockchain-based mini-decentralized applications (DApps) on Telegram, also known as Mini Apps, could be a “Trojan horse” for mass blockchain adoption.

Telegram Messenger is an instant messaging platform and ranks as the third-biggest messenger app in terms of monthly downloads after WhatsApp and Snapchat. According to the Telegram Team, Telegram users generate over 1 trillion views in channels every month.
