Often time startup copywriters confuse article writing with copywriting. While the former is can be educational or perhaps a fun of entertainment , the latter is actually for advertising. Taking an online course is a good way to help you understand what copywriting is really about and also get advice from experienced copywriters. It is not necessary you get a degree in copywriting to write awesome copies but taking a course in it is enough. It is quite impossible to take up copywriting with no knowledge or idea what it really means to be a copywriter or how to go about it.

Copywriting is the art of creating or strategically delivering words either in written or spoken dorm to get people to take some form of action. It is mainly for the purpose of advertising and other forms of marketing. To create brand awareness and ultimately persuade a group of people to buy a good or service. The copy may include blog post, sales letters, bill boards , magazine ads and others with the sole purpose of converting readers into customers.

To become a good copywriter you must understand the product you want to sell. Since you already know the aim of copywriting is majorly to sell a product then you need to understand what this product is. What makes it different from other products, what benefits it has, what pleasure it can give, the features it has to offer and others. With indept understanding you can decipher ways to project these uniqueness to the audience. In the process of understanding , you will find unique pieces that's will help you better when making a copy.

You also need to understand the audience this product or service is targeted at. Who they are, why they buy, what the love , their income bracket, their lifestyles, their dreams and hopes and even fears. With good understanding of all these you can tailor a copy that will drive them to get this product. For example , if you are trying to sell an insurance plan to middle aged low income earners, understanding their dreams, fears and hopes will help you. Most people in that bracket don't want to be homeless or poor when they retire. They want to be able to still afford and live a comfortable  life even after retiring. 

Being persuasive in writing is also crucial to being a copywriter. Not just merely writing but writing a copy so compelling and persuasive that will move the target audience to take immediate actions. Using words carefully so as to influence their previous beliefs and actions. Using more of "you" rather than "we" in your copy. Instead of " we offer...." use more of "you can own..." or "give your family.."

Creating catchy headlines is also important as it determines if people will actually stay to read your copy. Most times a copy usually sinks or swims when a reader reads the headlines. Most people don't have a long attention span and you need to be able to catch their attention just by reading your headlines. For example " Why your car keeps breaking in the middle of the road" rather than "we offer great car servicing". You also need to avoid including too much information in the copy as this would bore people out and they won't pay attention to your copy.  

In all, being consistent and working towards creating a  better selling copy than your last copy is an important tip to note as a startup.
