I've been holding off on posting some stuff so I could keep my word and let my next post about drones be 'Fresh Meat'.  I got that done, and this post has been burning a hole in my keyboard.

I dunno how deeply you have considered <a href="https://motherboard.vice.com/en_us/article/mb5bnp/privacy-laws-arent-ready-for-connected-cars-canada-us-eu">the massive amounts of highly personal information autonomous vehicles will be able to compile on you.</a>  I hadn't thought of that as much as I had the ability to cause you to die, in all the various ways vehicles can kill you, by remote control, or just to have your car deliver you to the torture palace for interrogation.

This is why I drive a car without even electronic ignition.  Nothing in my car can be hacked without a hacksaw.

I reckon we need to consider some safeguards, and far beyond those measures we take with our computers and phones to secure them from hackers.  Since we see how well that has been working (not!), we can see clearly that net connected vehicles are going to require an order of magnitude better security - and not just from ordinary hackers.  

If such vehicles aren't secure from state actors, I'll never have one.  I trust muggers more than I do cops, TBQH.

This is absolutely true, and I agree about not owning any smart vehicles.

However, they already collect almost all of the data they would get from a vehicle.  And further, there is no going back.  Not without looking like a nail that needs to be hammered.

A blogger that I know goes completely the opposite direction.  He has his phone send out and record its location.  Thus, he has a list of locations he was, so that he can bring that to court as evidence.  The NSA is already tracking and recording that information, but now, he has a copy.

Do we have to carry a phone with us every where we go?
I suggest a better solution would be to get out of the system, go off grid.
We all know what the end game is. They want the world to "Maintain humanity under 500,000,000 in perpetual balance with nature.."
That means they have to kill 93.4210526% of the population and then get rid of that many bodies. WOW
So the only hope we really have is that we can somehow overcome these bastards and restore humanity to a normal lifestyle.
All this tech is designed for one purpose and that purpose is the end game.

How I long for the days with no smart phones and no people walking into walls with one in their hand.

Actually you can turn that phone off and place it in a Faraday box and they can not get shit from it!

I understand your sentiment.
However, it also puts you into as much trouble as it gets you out of.

The only way out is to build communities, and then interconnected communities.
We have to start understanding and seeing sociopaths.  And then never letting them into any positions of authority or power.  (with them in charge, all you will get is bad, or worse)

Then we start building up the resources of good, and then we find that what is really evil is only a small percentage, and we will probably just ignore them.

And the other part about community is we have to stop having so much fear propaganda about not trusting your neighbors.  Thus, face to face interaction can be ok again.  It isn't really the cell phone, it is the social-structure that leaves the only safe outlet, the cell phone.

One problem with killing 90+% of humanity, is that most every mechanism they might try would be pretty hard to keep from being turned on them, as, biologically at least, they are human too.

So, things that make you easily differentiated from them, for instance by living out in the woods off the grid, can make you easily targetable.  I posted a while back that the only real difference between 'them' and 'us' is that they're rich as Croesus, while we're not.  If they can devise a way to make the lack of money fatal, their problem is solved.

I saw past the optimal population level paradigm decades ago, and hopefully the things that convinced me will convince them as well.  It isn't the number of mouths to feed that causes ecological degradation.  

It's poor management.

Your friend is smart, because as you point out, there's no stuffing the genie back in the bottle now.

This is exactly why I anticipate the blockchain and surveillance of <i>them</i> is the key to our future freedom.  We will soon gain the keys to that kingdom, just as militarized drones are becoming the new IEDs.

If you haven't read *The Circle* by Dave Eggars, or seen the movie I urge you to do so.  It's all about the end of privacy. The movie follows the book very closely except the ending, which is more satisfying than the book in some ways, but drastically changes the message the book is tried to convey.  That itself is quite chilling.  

If nothing else, reading the book will encourage you to write.  Eggars is a terrible writer but he has a best seller *and* now a movie.  There is no God!

I have a 1989 Ford Ranger 4x4.  It does have electronic ignition but that's about it. Manual everything else. I figure I'll just keep fixing it up until gasoline gets too expensive or driverless Uber is the only way to get around (or the killer drones get me)--whichever comes first.

I searched long and hard for my Ranger.  It's not uncommon to find an older vehicle that someone has put a lot of money into fixing up and then finally gave up on the project for whatever reason.  Older vehicles have depreciated as much as they are going to and putting money into restoring them (as long as you aren't beginning from scratch) becomes an investment rather than an expense.  I had a neighbor who was into vintage Fords from the 50s and 60s.  His last vehicle was a Mercury woodie in running condition. He paid $6000 for it but then found a rust bucket with all original equipment for $3000.  Admittedly, he put a lot of elbow grease into it, but it was his hobby and he got to drive it around for a couple of years before he sold it for $45,000.  Most folks buy a car for $45,000, spend $500/month buying it, and after a couple of years sell it for $25,000.  I'm not good at math, but the former seems to be wiser than the latter, but then I'm easily confused. ;)

I expect there are multiple ways to skin cats.  The Iron Law of Bureaucracy indicates there are good reasons to keep your communities small, as does the Monkeysphere, but you could have postulated other laws back prior to the invention of the wheel that proved walking was the ultimate mode of transportation.  

The point I'm trying to make is that current conditions are neither permanent, nor optimal.  The blockchain potentiates surveillance to be a mechanism to rein in government, and prevent gummint employees from being corrupt.  If government is no longer a spigot of dirty money, then maybe thugs won't wanna run it anymore.  

So on, so forth.  

Right now, with surveillance being so one-sided, what you're saying makes sense.  

Well, let's make our public 'servants' truly public, and make it a condition of government service to be surveilled 24/7 with the live feed posted to the blockchain so it's publicly auditable.

Let's see what that does about corruption.
