 <h1><center>From Level 3 to Level 4</center></h1>

After returning from Tahiti, Nestor and Moana continued to develop their software while driving professionally their trucks. They continued to get feedback from other independent truckers and to get help writing software from volunteers, including Paramvir and some engineers from RG Core Technologies.

Nestor had studied the revision 2 (published in 2023) of the [SAE International](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SAE_International)'s standard [J3016](https://cdn.oemoffhighway.com/files/base/acbm/ooh/document/2016/03/automated_driving.pdf) that defined six levels of driving automation, from no automation (level 0) to full automation (level 5).

The current version of NeMo software was already at level 3, which is "Conditional Automation", in some driving modes such as high-speed cruising on dry highways when it is not raining or snowing. But that was just the beginning.

The system was monitoring the driving environment, including the detection of rain or snow and the dryness of the road. Whenever it was not sure that the allowed conditions were met, it requested the driver to intervene and slowed down if the driver did not take over.

In addition, all the external communication channels were monitored to detect hacking. No change in driving behavior was authorized without the manual authorization of the driver.
In 2022-2023, there had been several accidents caused by hackers, including one where the truck was totaled and the driver died. Several startups in the self-driving truck business had failed due to these problems. The NeMo company was doing everything so that this would never happen to any truck running its software.

They had decided to not publicize widely their software system until they have reached level 4, which is "High Automation", in several driving modes such as high-speed cruising, expressway merging and exiting, and low-speed driving in traffic.

In November 2026, they were almost there.
