A few weeks ago I went for a walk in the mountains and my nephew took me to meet a lady who lives on the trail and lives alone with her dogs. She has no electricity and no butane gas stove, she cooks her food with firewood and that day I had the pleasure of having a coffee with water heated by firewood.

A walk like this is very nice for me, to disconnect for almost a day from the comforts I am used to, or rather, what is normal for me, however, if I had to live in a place like this, the truth is that I would miss my life as it is, for example, living in a world where electricity is illegal would be a real nightmare.

Recently it happened to me that there was a power outage at the beginning of the night, and although I live in Venezuela, this is quite common nowadays in most states of my country, however, in the capital, which is where I live, it is not so frequent or at least the interruptions are for a few minutes, but this time it seemed that the situation was going to extend because a loud explosion was heard and just that day I had not charged my cell phone enough, so I could only use the flashlight for a few minutes and it was already quite dark.

With a small container, some water, some oil, a bottle cap and a piece of wick I made a lighter that my friend @aguamiel taught me how to make and in the dark I entertained myself rereading fragments of one of my favorite books. That night there was only my bed, the dim light of the lighter, the book and me. I didn't want to drink coffee so as not to keep sleep away, although, at least, I had the domestic gas canister full so I could prepare it in the morning.

In a world in which electricity would be illegal, it would also be difficult to obtain domestic gas or it would be quite expensive, we would have to use it with austerity so as not to waste it and in the case of coffee I would prepare it as usual, heating water, adding coffee to it and then brewing it in cloth, with the difference that I would not always have freshly brewed coffee but I would have hot coffee available in my special thermos that allows me to keep it hot for several hours.

I don't like to visit much, I prefer my solitude, however, if electric service were illegal, I would make a few visits more often with my full thermos of coffee to share, I put the coffee and the other put the cookies or the bread.

Once a week, I would get together with neighbors to build two big fires, one for soup and one to heat enough water for everyone's coffee.

Occasionally, I would brew the coffee in the greca pot to get a more concentrated and dense flavor. As always, I would prepare as much as possible at one time and keep the rest in the thermos, which would not be easy to share, or I would only share it with someone very special.

Last weekend I went to my sister's house and saw that she has a mini metal pot the size of a coffee cup with a long wooden handle. On dark nights when I didn't have butane gas or didn't want to light a fire, I would heat water with ground coffee in a mini pot like that, using a lighter like the one I showed you, it would be another way to serve a cup of freshly brewed coffee, you don't even need to strain it, just wait a moment for the coffee particles to go down to the bottom. 

In a world in which electricity is illegal, there would surely be clandestine coffee shops with espresso machines, this would be expensive and an adventure that I would like to visit from time to time, in a place far away so that the exquisite aroma does not attract the authorities, although surely more than one would be camouflaged in a place like that, surely in a dystopian world in which electricity has been declared illegal many will do more than one madness for their daily dose of delicious coffee.
