On June 7 (local time) in Rome, Italy, a Spanish athlete missed out on a medal in the women's Race Walking 20-kilometer final at the European Athletics Championships 2024 when she went too fast and was overtaken by a runner behind her.

 Caught off guard, Garcia spotted Oleanowska passing to her right and sped up, but it wasn't enough. The UK's Guardian described her face as “contorted in horror”.

Garcia told Spanish media: “I'm really disappointed. I was confident that I could win bronze, but it turned out differently. I need to recover mentally."

In the roller skating speed event at the 2022 Hangzhou Asian Games, South Korea's last runner, Chung Chul-won, cheered as he saw the finish line in front of him, certain of a gold medal. 
The last runner from Taiwan, on the other hand, was not about to give up and stuck out his left foot as hard as he could toward the finish line. In that brief moment, the colors of the Korean and Taiwanese medals changed.


South Korea's final time was 4:05.702, just 0.01 seconds slower than Chinese Taipei (4:05.692). Taiwan took gold, South Korea took silver

Jeong Cheol-won said in a tearful voice, "My mistake is too big. I'm sorry to my fellow players, and I'm sorry to many people who cheered me on."

In a sports competition, one should never be complacent until crossing the finish line. However, as seen in two events, the athlete let their guard down and was overtaken while celebrating, resulting in a change of medals.

In South Korea, Asian Games gold medals are especially important because athletes who have to fulfill military service are granted special benefits for military service.


If you pop the champagne beforehand, you might regret it.  In life, just like in sports, you have to give your best until the end.
