Decidida a no quedarme atrás y entrar al reto, comencé el día tomándome fotos para aprovechar la luz de la mañana.

Curiosamente me enteré hoy también de esta comunidad. La premisa de Faces of Hive es muy sencilla: un espacio para compartir selfies.

Y yo dije *bueno, está bien, esto era lo que me hacía falta.*

Determined not to stay behind and enter the challenge, I started the day by taking photos to take advantage of the morning light.
Curiously, I also found out about this community today. The premise of Faces of Hive is very simple: a space to share selfies.
And I said well, okay, this was what I needed.

Me encanta hacerme selfies. Y a raíz del ejercicio de tomarme fotos para el reto, estuve pensando en el poder creativo y expresivo que pueden tener los selfies.

Como los autorretratos, el selfie es una forma de retratarse. 

En la era de la inmediatez y la información, ahora la posibilidad de retratarnos está al alcance de nuestra mano. 

Verse a uno mismo fuera de sí, es una cosa mágica. Y quizás por la facilidad con la que se pueda hacer ahora, esto se haya desvirtuado.

Like self - portraits,the selfie is a way of portraying yourself. 
In the age of immediacy and information, the possibility of portraying us is now at our fingertips.

Tampoco es como si el selfie – la autofoto, deba tener un sentido más profundo. Pero parece – o se tiene la creencia, de que el selfie muchas veces se queda en la superficialidad. En esa inmediatez y no en lo que representa *retratarse.*  

Y permítanme estar en desacuerdo con esto. Porque si pensamos un momento en el propósito de la fotografïa, la cosa parece cambiar.

And let me disagree with this. Because if we think for a moment about the purpose of photography, things seem to change.

Históricamente, el humano siempre ha tenido una atracción por dejar constancia del mundo que le rodea. La fotografía nace en parte por la necesidad científica de representar la naturaleza. 

Anteriormente, médicos, biólogos y científicos debían ser hábiles a la hora de describir o dibujar síntomas, plantas y fenómenos naturales para poder ser precisos en el registro.

Porque en el registro se basa la historia.

¿Y qué pasaría si tan solo presionando un botón pudiéramos capturar un momento de la historia? Sería más sencillo llevar ese registro y eventualmente, se transformaría en algo de muy fácil acceso.

>Historically, humans have always had an attraction to record the world around them. Photography was born partly out of the scientific need to represent nature.
Previously, doctors, biologists, and scientists had to be skilled in describing or drawing symptoms, plants, and natural phenomena in order to be accurate in recording.
Because history is based on the record.
And what if just by pressing a button we could capture a moment in history? It would be simpler to keep that record and eventually it would become very easy to access.

Entonces, la fotografía aparece como un medio de registrar – de forma más precisa, el mundo que nos rodea.

Toda la fotografía tiene un sentido de inmortalizar, de mantener en el tiempo, de perdurar. 
*Un sentido de trascendencia*. Siempre que se tenga una intensión de tomar una foto existirá detrás, una intensión de permanencia. Y en este sentido, ningún selfie podría ser superficial.

All photography has a sense of immortalizing, of maintaining over time, of enduring. *A sense of transcendence*. As long as you have an intention to take a photo, there will be an intension of permanence. And in this sense, no selfie could be superficial.

Ahora, ¿qué es un autorretrato? ¿Qué es un selfie? ¿Todos los selfies son autorretratos? ¿O el autorretrato tiene unos misterios ajenos a la naturaleza del selfie? 

El establecer el sentido de permanencia inherente a la fotografía no significa, que todas las intensiones de inmortalizar persigan los mismos objetivos. No todas las fotografías buscan que perdure lo mismo o de la misma forma.

Hacerse un selfie implica siempre autorretratarse, en teoría. Porque un selfie es una foto en la que el medio y el objeto son el mismo.
 
Pero ¿qué hace autorretrato a un autorretrato?

Establishing the sense of permanence inherent in photography does not mean that all intentions to immortalize pursue the same goals. Not all photographs seek to make it last the same or in the same way.
Taking a selfie always involves self-portraying, in theory. Because a selfie is a photo in which the medium and the object are the same.
But what does a self-portrait do to a self-portrait?

En él parece estar implícita una búsqueda profunda. Sea por inmortalizar el estado del alma a través del cuerpo, o con la intensión de descubrir nuevas cosas gracias a la visualización de uno mismo desde fuera. 

En el caso de la pintura, el autorretrato está considerado como uno de los ejercicios más complicados de hacer, debido al escrutinio que debe hacer el pintor de sus propias proporciones físicas e incluso anímicas

En cuanto al selfie, creo que podría ser una forma de abordar el autorretrato más que un estilo de fotografía en sí.  

Mientras que el selfie puede no perseguir una búsqueda interna, creo que el autorretrato nunca puede huir de ese propósito. Hay algo más que se esconde.

No tengo las respuestas. Realmente no sé qué línea separa lo uno de lo otro. Pero no deja de fascinarme como nos representamos – nos retratamos, en este mundo moderno.

Lo que yo hago en este espacio es autorretratarme constantemente. No siempre con fotografías. Casi siempre con palabras. Como por ver si hay algo oculto que solo puedo descubrir en la contemplación de lo que he creado. 

Por este sentido de trascendencia. Por no olvidarme. Por dejar un registro vivo de mí misma. Así sea en un sentido profundo o “superficial” porque al final, todo lo que hacemos con las manos o nos sale de la boca, habla inevitablemente de quienes somos. 

Y bueno, eso implica hacerme selfies de vez en cuando.
