As I mentioned in my travel posts last year, I don't like the vacation format that goes between hotel, sea and foods. I want to discover new places at homeland or abroad as much as possible. Before the pandemic, I traveled abroad every year. However, the pandemic caused millions of people, including me, to change their travel plans for at least 2 years. After the pandemic, it was time for me to start traveling abroad. Last year, I did this by going to Thessaloniki, Greece. This year, my first choice for traveling abroad was again Thessaloniki and some of Cycladic Islands in Greece. In the ninth and the last part of my travel post series, I will write about Mykonos, the world-famous as well as windy island of Greece.

*Merhaba Arkadaşlar*

*Geçen seneki seyahat yazılarımda da belirttiğim gibi otel, deniz ve yemek arasında geçip giden tatil anlayışını sevmiyorum. Yurtiçinde veya yurtdışında mümkün olduğunca yeni yerler keşfetmek istiyorum. Pandemiden önce her yıl yurtdışı seyahatleri yapan biriydim. Fakat, pandemi benim gibi dünyada milyonlarca insanların seyahat planlarını en az 2 yıl değiştirmesine sebep oldu. Pandemiden sonra benim için artık yurtdışı seyahatlerime başlamanın zamanı gelmişti. Geçen sene bunu Yunanistan’ın Selanik şehrine giderek gerçekleştirdim. Bu yılki ilk yurtdışı seyahat tercihim yine Yunanistan ve Yunanistan’ın birkaç Kiklad Adası oldu. Gezi yazımın dokuzuncu ve son bölümünde sizlere Yunanistan’ın dünyaca ünlü ve bir o kadar da rüzgarlı adası olan Mykonos’tan bahsedeceğim.*

We had come to the end of our two-day vacation plan in Paros island. We got up at around 7:30 in the morning and went to Parikia. First, we delivered the rental car. Then, we had breakfast near the port and started waiting for the ship that would take us to Mykonos. I could say that I was excited to go to this famous island, Mykonos island, which everyone has heard of it at least once in their life. The port of Paros was very crowded, just like the day we arrived. Tourists were moving from one island to another, just like us. The ship that would take us to Mykonos docked at the port of Paros at around 10:00. That day, the Aegean Sea was very windy, which meant that Mykonos would be windy as well. It was hard to even stand on the ship because even the huge ship was swaying from side to side.

*Paros adasındaki iki günlük tatil planımızın sonuna gelmiştik. Sabah saat yedi buçuk gibi kalkıp Parikia’ya gittik. Önce kiralık arabayı teslim ettik. Sonra limana yakın bir yerde kahvaltı yaptık ve Mykonos’a bizi götürecek gemiyi beklemeye başladık. Herkesin adını hayatında en az bir kere duyduğu, meşhur Mykonos adasına gideceğim için heyecanlıydım diyebilirdim. Paros limanı geldiğimiz günkü gibi çok kalabalıktı. Turistler bizim gibi bir adadan başka bir adaya geçiyordu. Saat 10 gibi bizi Mykonos’a götürecek gemi Paros Limanı’na yanaşmıştı. O gün Ege Denizi çok rüzgarlıydı ve bu da Mykonos’un darüzgarlı olacağı anlamına geliyordu. Koskoca gemi bile bir sağa bir sola sallandığı için gemide ayakta durmak bile zordu.*

After about 45 minutes, we arrived at the new port of Mykonos. The wind was stronger in Mykonos. This must have been our luck. Sometimes the wind was so strong that we had difficulty to stand on foot. We had to go to the old port to walk around Mykonos. We didn’t want to take a sea bus while it was such windy. After waiting for a taxi for a while, we got in a taxi with a few other people and arrived at the old port, the center of Mykonos, in 10 minutes. We were now in the world-famous island. We started walking on the streets of Mykonos. Like the other Cycladic islands, Mykonos has narrow, white-painted, labyrinthine, stone-paved streets; white-washed houses with mostly blue doors and windows; shops, taverns, restaurants and bars. However, what caught my attention in Mykonos was the large number of small and big churches. There was a church on almost every street.

*Yaklaşık 45 dakika sonra Mykonos’un yeni limanına varmıştık. Rüzgar Mykonos’ta daha şiddetliydi. Bu da bizim şansımıza olsa gerekti. Rüzgar bazen o kadar şiddetli esiyordu ki ayakta durmakta bile zorlanıyorduk. Mykonos’u gezmek için eski limana gitmemiz gerekiyordu. Bu rüzgarda deniz otobüsüne binmek istemedik. Bir süre taksi bekledikten sonra birkaç kişiyle taksiye binerek 10 dakikada eski limana, Mykonos’un merkezine vardık. Artık dünyaca ünlü olan adadaydık. Mykonos’un sokaklarında yürümeye başladık. Mykonos’un da diğer Kiklad adalarına gibi beyaz boyalı, labirent gibi, taş döşeli dar sokakları; beyaz badanalı, ağırlıklı mavi renkli kapı-penceresi olan evleri; dükkanları, tavernaları, restorantları ve barları var. Fakat, Mykonos’ta dikkatimi çeken şey çok sayıda küçük ve büyük kilisenin olmasıydı. Neredeyse her sokakta kilise vardı.*

There was no slowdown in the wind. Mykonos’s narrow streets and tightly packed buildings protected us from the wind to some extent. We continued our walk towards the seaside, where there are the most beautiful views of Mykonos. We sat at a restaurant overlooking Little Venice and the Windmills of Mykonos, and had some snacks there. We know that the Black Sea is wavy and rough; but I have never seen the Aegean Sea this wavy. The wind was blowing so hard on the seaside that the waves were hitting the shore hard. I can say that I got wet while taking photos : )

*Rüzgarın hızında bir yavaşlama yoktu. Mykonos’un dar sokakları ve birbirine sık yapıları, bizi rüzgardan bir nebze olsun koruyordu. Mykonos’un en güzel manzaralarının bulunduğu deniz kenarına doğru yürüyüşümüze devam ettik. Mykomos’un Küçük Venedik ve Yel Değirmenlerini gören bir restorantta oturduk, burda aparatif bir şeyler yedik. Karadeniz’in dalgalı ve hırçın olduğunu biliyoruz; ama ben Ege Denizi’ni hiç bu kadar dalgalı görmemiştim. Deniz kenarında rüzgar o kadar güçlü esiyordu ki dalgalar kıyıya sert bir şekilde çarpıyordu. Fotoğraf çekerken ıslandım diyebilirim : )*

We left there and continued walking towards the old port of Mykonos. We were struggling with the wind that was blowing at almost 40 km/h. We were lucky in terms of wind on the other islands, but I can’t say the same for Mykonos. This situation affected both our morale and our mood, to be honest. Since the old port of Mykonos is in an open area, I can say that this is where the wind blows the strongest. My phone was about to flow out of my hand while I was taking photos. There is also a breakwater here and the Paralia Megali Ammos beach. Since the sea is shallow, it is not worth going into the sea.

*Buradan ayrılarak Mykonos’un eski limanına doğru yürümeye devam ettik. Neredeyse saatte 40 km hızla esen bir rüzgarla mücadele ediyorduk. Rüzgar bakımından diğer adalarda şansımız yaver gitmişti, ama Mykonos için aynı şeyi söyleyemem. Bu durum hem moralimizi hem de ruh halimizi etkilemişti açıkcası. Mykonos’un eski limanı açık bir alanda olduğundan burası rüzgarın en şiddetli estiği yer diyebilirim. Fotoğraf çekerken neredeyse telefon elimden uçacaktı. Burada ayrıca bir dalga kıran yapılmış ve Paralia Megali Ammos plajı bulunmaktadır. Denizin derinliği az olduğundan pek de denize girmeye değmez.*

We continued walking along the coast towards the famous windmills of Mykonos. By now the wind had exhausted us mentally. We had a snack and dessert at a restaurant in one of the narrow streets of Mykonos. I can say that the prices in Mykonos are more expensive than that of Santorini. Staying here for a few days must be very expensive in high season. After walking a little more, we reached the windmills. I think this must be the place where the winds blow the hardest in Mykonos, because the windmills were built here right against the wind.

*Sahilden Mykonos’un ünlü yel değirmenlerinin olduğu yere doğru yürümeye devam ettik. Artık rüzgar bizi mental olarak da iyice yormuştu. Mykonos’un dar sokaklarından birindeki bir restorantta bir şeyler atıştırdık, tatlı yedik. Mykonos’taki fiyatlar Santorini’den de pahalı diyebilirim. Burada birkaç gün konaklamak, sezonda çok pahalı olsa gerek. Biraz daha yürüdükten sonra yel değirmenlerine ulaşmıştık. Sanırım Mykonos’taki rüzgarların en sert estiği yer burası olmalı ki yel değirmenleri tam rüzgara karşı buraya inşa edilmiş.*

Staying at the windmills for a while, we walked back towards the old port. We took a sea bus from the old port to the new port and waited for the ship that would take us back to Paros. Since the ship arrived in Mykonos a little late due to the wind, we arrived at Paros at around nine in the evening. The next day, we went from Paros to Athens, arrived in Istanbul by plane the same day and completed our Greece tour. We saw many things unique to the Greek islands during our five-day vacation. Except for the views in Santorini, the things I liked the most were the narrow streets painted white and the houses with flowers and colorful doors and windows. In my opinion, Paros is an island that has been undervalued by the famous islands like Santorini and Mykonos and has not received the value it deserves. I would like to come back to Paros and Naoussa some day.

*Bir süre yel değirmenlerinin orda kaldıktan sonra eski limana doğru geri yürüdük. Eski limandan deniz otobüsü ile yeni limana geçip bizi Paros adasına geri götürecek gemiyi bekledik. Gemi Mykonos’a rüzgar nedeniyle  biraz rötarlı geldiği için akşam saat dokuz gibi Paros adasına vardık. Ertesi gün Paros’tan Atinaya geçtik, aynı gün uçakla İstanbul’a vardık ve Yunanistan turumuzu tamamladık. Beş günlük tatilde Yunan adalarına özgü birçok şey görmüştük. Santorini’deki manzaraları saymazsak, benim en çok hoşuma gidenler, beyaz boyalı dar sokaklar, çiçekli ve rengarenk kapı-pencereli evler olmuştu. Bana göre Paros adası, Santorini ve Mykonos gibi ünlü adaların gölgesinde kalmış, hak ettiği değeri alamayan bir ada. Bir gün Paros’a ve Naoussa’ya tekrar gelmek isterim.*
