## The info

**On last February 14,** an MBA student at College of St Rose University in New York used a USB Killer key to destroy **59 Windows PCs** and **7 Mac computers** that were installed in the school's computer rooms. This represents financial damage of **58,471 dollars.**

This key type works by rapidly charging thumb drive capacitors from the USB power supply, and then discharging the electrical current back into the USB slot, all in a matter of seconds. **The result is fatal:** the computer’s motherboard is immediately *fried.*

The man, who has filmed himself with his smartphone during his destructive tour, has acknowledged the facts and pleads guilty. This act could give him a maximum of **10 years in prison** and a fine of **$250,000.** *(oops..)*

## What does this entail

This fact shows, once again, the harmful attraction that causes the Killer USB key on certain people. This is not the first time a student uses a Killer USB key to destroy computer equipment in his school. **In 2016,** a student from Estaca, an engineering school in Laval, had already [**fried 88 computers.**](https://hightech.bfmtv.com/securite/il-a-grille-88-ordinateurs-de-son-ecole-d-ingenieurs-pour-l-adrenaline-1063042.html)

**Why?** To have *"a little adrenaline rush".* Unfortunately, the USB Killer has been freely available on the Internet since 2016. Now there is even [**a version 3**](https://www.usbkill.com/products/usb-killer-v3), even more efficient and even compatible with mobile devices. *(This last link is only there for educational purpose, I do not recommend to buy it!)*
