“At what point did you decide that my wife had to be sacrificed, Belmara?”
	
“I couldn’t exactly have her return to you,” Belmara defended.  “Not after she became part of T.R.A.S.H. Not after what she learned. How much did she tell you about my little pets in the mountains of Balan?”
	
“Pets? What pets?”
	
Belmara smiled. “Nothing you need to know about… though I was thinking of sending your daughter there – after she’s conceived Issyk’s child, anyway. She doesn’t know about it yet though.”
	
“What’s this about my daughter?”
	
“You didn’t know? She’s been sleeping with the leader of T.R.A.S.H. - not sure how long, but she wasn’t pregnant as of this morning. Another day should take care of that though.”
	
“This is my daughter you’re talking about, Belmara!” Fain growled. “How dare you talk about her as if she was some animal for you to breed!”
	
“They were already there,” Belmara excused. “All we did was lock them in together. I’m sure you know that trying to force a mating between two unwilling individuals is almost impossible. Believe me, Miss Kulun was more than willing to breed with Issyk!”
	
“I thought you preferred to kill your dissidents,” Fain said. “Why let Issyk live at all?” He realized that Oleana had joined them in the room.
	
“It hardly matters if he knows, Oleana,” Belmara replied out loud. “It’s not like we’re going to let him go.” She turned back to Fain. “There’s a small matter of karma.”
	
“Karma?!” he spluttered, hardly believing his ears. Belmara with a conscience?!
	
“And a promise I made to his grandmother. Don’t tell him! I’d rather he not know.”
	
Fain laughed, unable to contain himself.
	
“The Curator did not learn her lesson of karma and it bit her in the ass, big time. Forced her to leave Terrenden for good! Made room for me to become Empress, rather than her. Believe me, you never want to see her as Empress! Not again.”
	
“Again? You are the first empress in living memory, Belmara.”
	
“Be glad of that! The Curator was in charge of much in her day. Be grateful that her day will never return!”
	
“So, what are you going to do with us?”
	
“That’s a good question… Oleana, do you have any ideas?”
	
“We could play with them awhile, Mother… Then we can leave them here when we leave… there are plenty of explosive pre-rigged around this building. Take out the Kulun family once and for all.”
	
“Sounds exciting,” Belmara said with relish, rubbing her hands together. “Maybe we can give them each a young lady to entertain them for awhile first...”
	
“You are being awfully kind, Mother.”
	
“Never let it be said that I neglect the needs of my people… all their needs! Send the ladies before night. And escort the men to their cells. I’ll decide what to do with them later – after I’ve had my nap,” Belmara ordered.
	
“Yes, Mother,” Oleana said. “Come with me, men. Do what you’re told or bad things will happen to your daughter, okay?”
	
Fain nodded and followed. As they walked, his brain worked overtime, thinking about everything that had happened and been said. Then he found the one inconsistency.
	
<Feel for your sister,> Fain directed his sons. If Belmara would not harm Issyk because of a promise, then Issyk’s unborn child would also be protected – especially if Hrista was wanted for another project. His daughter would be safe, no matter what he and his sons did! That realization began to give him hope. While Oleana was not the weakest of women, he had already felt that which would weaken her the most. Desire.
	
They reached the door Oleana said would be his. She opened it. “Show me around,” Fain requested.
	
She obeyed, going into the room, lingering too close to Fain. Yes, it was going to work. <Forgive me Hraeva!> He captured the needy woman in his arms and pressed his lips to hers while broadcasting the feeling of physical lust to anyone close enough to feel.

“Ew!” Hergil complained as he and Hamon hurried down the corridor.
	
“You won’t think so when you have a woman in your arms!” Hamon insisted.
	
“But Dad! And Belmara’s own daughter!”
	
“He’s had nothing since we got to Çtarest. Even the abári has needs!”
	
“You don’t think he’s really going to...”
	
“If it gets us and Hrista out of here, I think he would. Wouldn’t you?” Hamon asked.
	
“Would you?”
	
“If it got me back to Phoebe in time to see our child born, yes.”
	
“So, shut up already! Let’s find Hrista!”
	
Hamon grinned and ran down the next corridor. “Here!” he called.
	
Hergil caught up as Hamon tried the door. It was locked, of course. 
	
“Magna-seals if I had to bet,” Hamon said. “Are you any good with those?”
	
“I can do one better,” Hergil said, drawing his shaze and applying its length to the door beside the handle.
	
“How?” he asked.
	
“Shut up and focus!”
	
Hamon added his hand to the fuller of the blade. Hergil watched the glow intensify as his brother joined in, focusing on breaching the lock.
	
The click sounded half a second before Hergil pulled open the door and burst in… only to see his sister naked on the bed, her lover thrusting into her hurriedly.
	
“You could have given us a few more minutes!” the man snapped between ragged breaths.
	
Hergil stepped back out, closing the door again.
	
“Thank you!” the call followed him.
	
“Things you can’t unsee!” Hamon said as they waited.
	
“Find a way to get Anney back to Çtarest,” Hergil moaned at his brother, feeling himself harden.
	
“There are others in our retreat. Take that Gaela, for instance,” Hamon said. “She’s pretty hot.”
	
“She loves Nashan.”
	
“She’s never said it.”
	
“She told me once. He’s too shy though.”
	
“We could bring some girls up from Omrill. We haven’t had a servant in ages – and Phoebe’s going to be unable to do all that stuff now – despite her protests.” Hamon grinned. “I love that woman!”
	
“I want Anney,” Hergil insisted.
	
“Who belongs to someone else – in Tranas!”
	
“Belonged. Nampe’s been dead for over a year now. Syr is going to need a sibling. Why doesn’t she just get over it? - For the sake of their son?”
	
“Ask Dad in a year… He’s never got over Mom either.”
	
The door opened. “You may come in now, brothers,” the man  invited.
