5 Gründe, warum es schwierig ist, eine FPV (First Person View)-Drohne zu fliegen:

### 1. Generell schwierig ein Flugzeug zu steuern

Fangen wir mit einem Captain Obvious-Argument an.

Evolutions-biologisch sind wir Menschen eher dafür optimiert, uns auf einer Ebene fortzubewegen, wenn man so will in zwei Dimensionen (x und y), was auch der Gravitation auf der Erde geschuldet ist.

Die meisten Fahrzeuge, die wir steuern, bewegen sich auch nur (im Normalfall) in zwei Dimensionen wie Autos, Fahrräder oder Boote.

Mit dem Fliegen kommt dann eine zusätzliche Dimension der möglichen Fortbewegung hinzu, was die Steuerung grundsätzlich komplizierter macht.

### 2. Neue Klasse von Flugobjekt

Kleine, unbemannte Quadcopter-Drohnen sind auch eine eigene, neue Flugklasse an sich. Durch das geringe (unbemannte) Gewicht und den technologischen Fortschritt in der Akku- und Smartphone-Technologie, zeichnen sich Drohnen durch extreme Agilität und hohe Beschleunigung aus, was wiederum das Fliegen zum Teil einfacher macht, aber auch erschweren kann.

Drohnen können sich dank ihres Quadcopter-Designs in alle Richtungen bewegen, auch nach hinten fliegen oder an einem fixem Punkt im Raum schweben.

FPV-Drohnen erfordern extreme Reaktionszeiten und extrem präzise Bewegungen, um diese zu steuern und zu stabilisieren.

### 3. FPV-Headsets verursachen Motion-Sickness

Ein weiteres Problem ist die Steuerung mit VR-ähnlichen Headsets, was oft zu Motion-Sickness führen kann, vor allem wenn man VR noch nicht gewohnt ist.

Um die Motion-Sickness etwas zu reduzieren, haben FPV-Headsets üblicherweise ein viel kleineres Sichtfeld (Field of View) als man das von VR-Headsets gewohnt ist.

Dazu kommt, was ebenfalls als Nachteil gesehen werden kann, dass die Cockpit-Ansicht im FPV-Headset 2-dimensional und nicht 3-dimensional ist, was das Steuern und die räumliche Wahrnehmung erschwert.

Auch folgt die Cockpit-Ansicht (derzeit) nicht den Kopfbewegungen, wie man das von VR gewohnt ist. Man starrt immer auf ein fixes Display.

### 4. Zu wenig Computer/Sensor-Unterstützung

Diesen Punkt habe ich im letzten Artikel zu Smart-Drohnen bereits ausführlich erläutert. Das Problem ist, das FPV-Drohnen normalerweise in einem Art manuellen Modus (Acro, Racing Modus) gesteuert werden, wo man beinahe sämtliche Computer- und Sensoren-Unterstüztung verliert. Das hat wie immer Vor- und Nachteile. Der Vorteil ist, dass man eine Drohen damit durch Rotationsbewegungen eher wie einen Kampfjet steuern kann, was für Rennen oder akrobatische Figuren von Vorteil sein kann. Der Nachteil ist, dass sich die Drohne nicht mehr automatisch stabilisiert und die Stick-Steuerung alles andere als einfach und intuitiv ist, und ein langes und mühsames Training erfordert.

### 5. Stick-Controller nicht optimal

Mittlerweile denke ich, dass die Stick-Steuerung nicht optimal für FPV-Drohnen ist, da man für das Steuern von Drohnen eine enorme Präzision benötigt.

Die Eingabe erfordert mikroskopische Stick-Bewegungen, was nicht einfach ist, vor allem, wenn man sich während der Steuerung selbst in einem bewegenden, holprigen Fahrzeug befindet. Ohne Computer-Unterstützung wird das enorm schwierig, eine Drohne präzise zu steuern.

Alternativ wäre die Steuerung einer FPV-Drohne über einen normalen Laptop-Bildschirm, Maus und Tastatur, wundere mich, warum das noch nicht unterstützt wird, Gaming-Mäuse haben mittlerweile eine enorme Präzision, die, sagt man, Gamepads haushoch überlegen ist. Noch besser wäre es allerdings an neuen Controller-Ansätzen zu forschen, die eher mit VR-Controllern vergleichbar und wesentlich intuitiver sind.

5 reasons why it is difficult to fly an FPV (First Person View) drone:

### 1. It is generally difficult to control an aircraft

Let's start with the Captain Obvious argument.

In terms of evolutionary biology, we humans are more optimized for moving on a plane, in two dimensions (x and y) so to speak, which is also due to Earth's gravity.

Most of the vehicles we control also only move in two dimensions (under normal circumstances), such as cars, bicycles, or boats.

Flying adds an additional dimension of possible movement, which makes flying fundamentally more complicated.

### 2. New class of flying object

Small, unmanned quadcopter drones are also a new class of aircraft in their own right. Due to their low (unmanned) weight and advances in battery and smartphone technology, drones are extremely agile and have high acceleration, which in turn makes flying easier in some respects, but can also make it more difficult.

Thanks to their quadcopter design, drones can move in all directions, including flying backwards or hovering at a fixed point in space.

FPV drones require extremely fast reaction times and extremely precise movements to control and stabilize them.

### 3. FPV headsets cause motion sickness

Another problem is controlling the drone with VR-like headsets, which can often lead to motion sickness, especially if you are not yet used to VR.

To reduce motion sickness somewhat, FPV headsets usually have a much smaller field of view than VR headsets.

In addition, another disadvantage is that the cockpit view in the FPV headset is two-dimensional rather than three-dimensional, which makes control and spatial perception more difficult.

Furthermore, the cockpit view does not (currently) follow head movements, as is the case with VR. You are always staring at a fixed display.

### 4. Insufficient computer/sensor support

I already explained this point in detail in my last article on smart drones. The problem is that FPV drones are usually controlled in a kind of manual mode (Acro, Racing mode), where you lose almost all computer and sensor support. As always, this has advantages and disadvantages. The advantage is that you can control a drone more like a fighter jet with rotational movements, which can be advantageous for racing or acrobatic maneuvers. The disadvantage is that the drone no longer stabilizes itself automatically and the stick control is anything but simple and intuitive, requiring long and tedious training.

### 5. Stick controller not optimal

I now believe that stick control is not optimal for FPV drones, as controlling drones requires enormous precision.

The input requires microscopic stick movements, which is not easy, especially when you are  in a moving, bumpy vehicle while controlling it. Without computer support, it becomes extremely difficult to control a drone precisely.

Alternatively, controlling an FPV drone via a normal laptop screen, mouse, and keyboard would be an option. I wonder why this isn't supported yet, as gaming mice now offer tremendous precision that is often said to be superior to gamepads. However, it would be even better to research new controller approaches that are more comparable to VR controllers and much more intuitive.
