Nebula ist eine werbe-freie, subscription-basierte Streaming-Plattform von Creators ohne Google dazwischen. Denkt ihr Nebula könnte YouTube ersetzen?

Wir alle kennen die Probleme mit YouTube / Google. Zensur, falsche Urheberrechts-Claims oder Strikes, Demonetarisierung, Crypto/YouTube Adpocalypse, immer mehr Werbung, Ad Blocker nicht mehr erlaubt, intransparenter Recommendation Algo und Creator bekommen nur 45% der Werbeinnahmen, Google 55%.

Einige von Google enttäuschten Creator haben sich zusammengetan und eine Video-Plattform geschaffen ohne Google dazwischen, um die oben angeführten Probleme zu umgehen.

Nebula existiert bereits seit 2019 und hat ein ähnliches Konzept wie Netflix. Man bezahlt eine monatliche Gebühr (Standard EUR 5 pro Monat, mit Invite nur EUR 2.50) und kann sich dann so viele Videos ansehen wie man will. Werbefrei und ohne die Angst haben zu müssen, dass YouTube Videos löscht, demonetarisiert oder shadow banned.

Finde das Netflix-ähnliche Konzept nicht schlecht und einige (Tech und Science) YouTuber produzieren bereits für Nebula exklusive, hochwertige Inhalte wie TechAltar, ColdFusion oder JoeScott.

Ganz so dezentralisiert wie Hive oder 3speak.tv ist Nebula aber nicht.

Was sagt ihr zu Nebula? Denkt ihr Nebula könnte YouTube ersetzen zumindest für hochwertige Videos und Dokumentationen? Würdet ihr dafür eine kleine monatliche Gebühr bezahlen?

Do you think Nebula could replace YouTube?

We all know the problems with YouTube / Google. Censorship, wrong copyright claims or strikes, demonetization, Crypto/YouTube adpocalypse, more and more ads, ad blockers not allowed anymore, non-transparent recommendation algo and Creators get only 45% of the ad revenue, Google 55%.

Some creators disappointed by Google got together and created a video platform without Google in between to get around the problems listed above.

Nebula has been around since 2019 and has a similar concept to Netflix. You pay a monthly fee (standard EUR 5 per month, with Invite only EUR 2.50) and then you can watch as many videos as you want. Ad-free and without the fear of YouTube deleting, demonetarizing or shadow banning videos.

I think the Netflix-like concept is not bad and some (tech and science) YouTubers are already producing exclusive, high-quality content for Nebula like TechAltar, ColdFusion or JoeScott.

However, Nebula is not quite as decentralized as Hive or 3speak.tv.

Youtube used to be a better a place but now everyone try to sell u something whether it's a course or a service. I use an open source add blocker as it's annoying to watch not 1 but 2 unskippable ads per video. I'd rather invest 5 euros instead of paying for a nebula sub

I don't think it would and I don't think I would pay a monthly fee for it. If anything, I treat it like any of the other streaming services and that means I wait for my backlog to stack up then pay for 1 month to binge watch.

Ich glaube nicht, dass sie es schaffen. Es ist ja wieder so ein Mittelding, kein YouTube und auch kein 3Speak -- um mal die Extreme zu nennen. Schwierig. Ob das Netflix-Konzept bei Vidoes Sinn macht, ist eine andere Geschichte. Und auch hier gibt's ja Konkurrenz von der Podcasting-Branche, was ja auch Videos beinhaltet.

Never heard about it, I will have a look.
My opinion about this ‘new’ platforms is that they will hardly have the wide content approach that the mainstream platforms have. I think this is why people pay for Yb, because they can access to so much content, from music, to movies, shorts, tutorials, fan pages, etc…
I wish a decentralised platform would take over Yb or Insta… in order to gain back the control from who is actually seeing your content. Unfortunately, it feels like a long way to go.

Für auf hochwertigen Nischencontent spezialisierte Creator könnte das durchaus spannend sein (sofern sie es schaffen, dort auch genügend Zuschauer zu bekommen), aber für "stinknormale" Nutzer lohnt sich das im Moment eher nicht denke ich... Die wollen eher seichte Unterhaltungskost, die schnell verfügbar ist - und da ist YouTube wohl immer noch die bessere Wahl

The main problem is user database. With Nebula only a small number of users will be using it because it is mainly technology and science driven content platform while on Youtube everyone has something to share and enjoy. And other problem with Nebula is its integration into other platform where Youtube is easily integrated.
