Is OpenAI imploding? Sam Altman, Greg Brockman and hundreds of employees joining Microsoft?

Das OpenAI-Drama wird immer chaotischer. Nachdem der Vorstand Sam Altman, der selbst keine Firmenanteile besitzt, überraschend gefeurt wurde, ist bei OpenAI kein Stein auf dem anderen geblieben.

Kurz sah es sah aus, als ob Sam zu OpenAI zurückkehren würde, dann hat Satya Nadella einen 4D-Schachzug vollbracht. Anscheinend laufen Sam und Greg Brockman zu Microsoft über und mit ihnen hunderte Mitarbeiter.

Es gab auch einen Brief an den Vorstand von OpenAI, wo fast die gesamte (Ex-)Belegschaft von OpenAI die Auflösung des non-profit Vorstands und eine Rückkehr von Sam Altman als CEO fordert. Die Konstruktion mit dem non-profit Vorstand war mit den kommerziellen Zielen von OpenAI komplett misaligned.

Und diesen Brief hat zuletzt auch Ilya Sutskever unterschrieben, dem nachgesagt wird, davor federführend für die Entlassung von Sam Altman verantwortlich zu zeichnen.

Diesen Schritt bedauert er plötzlich. 180-Grad-Wende.

Mitarbeiter von OpenAI werden mit teils unmoralischen Angeboten von allen Richtungen angeworben.

Das sieht nicht gut aus für OpenAI meiner Meinung nach. Könnte mir vorstellen, dass ein Großteil direkt zu Microsoft wechselt.

Das war es dann mit der von Ilya Sutskever vergeschobenen "Verlangsamung" der AI-Entwicklung. Das ist in so einem kompetitiven Umfeld schlicht unmöglich.

Is OpenAI imploding right now?

The OpenAI drama is becoming increasingly chaotic. After the surprising firing of CEO Sam Altman, who himself owns equity in the company, no stone has been left unturned at OpenAI.

It briefly looked like Sam would return to OpenAI, then Satya Nadella pulled off a 4D chess move. Apparently Sam and Greg Brockman are defecting to Microsoft and with them hundreds of employees.

There was also a letter to the board of OpenAI where almost the entire (ex-)staff of OpenAI demanded the dissolution of the non-profit board and a return of Sam Altman as CEO. The structure with the non-profit board was completely misaligned with the commercial goals of OpenAI.

Ilya Sutskever, who is said to be previously responsible for the dismissal of Sam Altman, also signed this letter.

He suddenly regrets his step. 180-degree turnaround.

OpenAI employees are being recruited from all directions with sometimes unethical offers.

This does not look good for OpenAI in my opinion. I could imagine that the majority of them will switch directly to Microsoft.

That's it for the "slowdown" in AI development that Ilya Sutskever has been putting off. That is simply impossible in such a competitive environment.

Das OpenAI Board hat bei Anthropic nachgefragt und wollte offenbar die beiden Firmen (wieder) zusammenführen: https://www.reuters.com/technology/openais-board-approached-anthropic-ceo-about-top-job-merger-sources-2023-11-21/

Seltsame Aktion, mach aber Sinn, wenn man bedenkt, dass das verbleibende OpenAI Board und Anthropic beide eine Nähe zum Effektiven Altruismus haben und wie diese Philosophie zu KI steht. Offenbar ist November der Monat, in dem Effektive Altruisten effektiv eine verheißungsvolle Firma vernichten, bin schon auf die 2024 Ausgabe gespannt 😂

Wenn wirklich ein Großteil der Belegschaft von OpenAI weggeht, dann schaut die Zukunft für OpenAI nicht wirklich rosig aus. Die Situation entwickelt sich so schnell, dass im Moment Prognosen sinnlos sind, weil es in 24h eh wieder ganz anders ausschaut 😅
