Ist der Bybit-Ethereum-Hack wirklich der größte Hack in der Krypto-Geschichte?

Letztes Wochenende wurde bekannt, dass von Bybit eine halbe Million ETH bei einer Transaktion von einer Cold-Wallet auf eine Hot-Wallet gestohlen wurden, das entsprach ungefähr einem Marktwert von 1.4 Milliarden Dollar an dem Tag, was ein heftiger Betrag ist.

Hinter dem Hack wird die nord-koreanische Lazarus Hackergruppe vermutet. Weiters dürfte es sich nicht um eine Schwachstelle von Ethereum handeln, sondern es dürfte eher eine UI-Spoofing-Attacke beim Signieren von Transaktionen zum Einsatz gekommen sein. Möglich, dass auch Geräte innerhalb der Exchange kompromittiert wurden.

Aber es gibt auch ein grundlegendes Problem beim Signieren von Ethereum-Transaktionen mit Smart Contracts, das wir auch von komplexen Hive/Hive-Engine-Transaktionen kennen. Oft ist es gar nicht so einfach möglich zu überprüfen, was man überhaupt signiert und was die Auswirkungen von Smart-Contracts tatsächlich sind. Da müssten die UIs noch viel besser werden.

Aber zurück zur Frage, ob der Hack wirklich der größte in der Geschichte war. Das hängt davon ab, ob man den damaligen oder den heutigen Marktwert der gestohlenen Kryptos heranzieht.

Für mich ist immer noch der größte Hack/Scam der Kryptogeschichte der Mt. Gox Crash von 2014, wo 750-850 Tausend Bitcoin plötzlich verschwunden sind (laut Wikipedia 744,408), was für damalige Verhältnisse katastrophal war, auch wenn der damalige Wert vielleicht mit einer Milliarde geringer ausgefallen ist, so war der Impact viel, viel größer.  Der heutige Marktwert wäre übrigens bei 70-80 Milliarden.

Der Kryptomarkt war 2014 einfach viel kleiner als heute und Mt. Gox die wichtigste und einzige große Exchange.

Was man am Mt. Gox-Fall auch sieht ist, dass die Grenze zwischen Hack und Scam fließend sind.

Wenn man Scams miteinbezieht, war vielleicht der FTX-Scam mit einem damaligen Verlust von 8 Milliarden weitaus größer als der Bybit-Hack.

Dazu kommt, dass Bybit in der Lage ist, den Verlust auszugleichen und 446,870 ETH nachgekauft hat.

Laut Chainalysis werden jedes Jahr mehrere Milliarden Dollar an Kryptos gestohlen. Trotzdem ist der Bybit Hack einer der größten einzelnen Hacks überhaupt und vielleicht auch für das aktuelle Kryptoblutbad mitverantwortlich.

Is the Bybit Ethereum hack really the biggest hack in crypto history?

Last weekend, it was revealed that half a million ETH were stolen from Bybit in a transaction from a cold wallet to a hot wallet, equating to a market value of approximately 1.4 billion dollars on the day, which is a hefty amount.

The North Korean Lazarus hacker group is suspected to be behind the hack. Furthermore, it is unlikely to be a vulnerability in the Ethereum protocol itself , but rather a reported UI spoofing attack when signing transactions. It is possible that devices within the exchange were also compromised.

But there is also a fundamental problem when signing Ethereum transactions with smart contracts, which we also know from complex Hive/Hive Engine transactions. It is often not so easy to check what one is actually signing and what the effects of smart contracts actually are. The UIs need to get much better in this respect.

But back to the question of whether the hack was really the biggest in history. That depends on whether you look at the market value of the stolen crypto at the time or today.

For me, the biggest hack/scam in crypto history is still the Mt. Gox crash of 2014, where 750-850 thousand Bitcoin suddenly disappeared (744,408 according to Wikipedia), which was catastrophic by the standards of the time, even if the value at the time may have been lower at a billion, the impact was much, much greater.  Incidentally, today's market value would be 70-80 billion.

The crypto market was simply much smaller in 2014 than it is today and Mt. Gox was the most important and only major exchange.

What you can also see from the Mt. Gox case is that the line between hack and scam is blurred.

If you include scams, the FTX scam was perhaps far bigger than the Bybit hack, with a loss of 8 billion at the time.

In addition, Bybit is able to make up for the loss and has bought 446,870 ETH back from the market.

According to Chainalysis, several billion dollars worth of crypto is stolen every year. Nevertheless, the Bybit hack is one of the biggest single hacks ever and perhaps also partly responsible for the current crypto bloodbath.
