Quantum computers are not Turing-complete. Nobody really knows how to do useful computations on quantum computers (if they existed)
Damit ein Computer nützliche Berechnungen durchführen kann, braucht es nach Alan Turing zwei Dinge: Speicher und die Fähigkeit logische Operationen auf dem Speicher auszuführen, dazu zählt auch das Auslesen und das Abspeichern von Informationen.

Und hier fängt das Problem der Nützlichkeit von Quanten-Computern an. Quanten-Computer haben außer den qubits selbst keinen wirklichen Speicher, auf denen sie operieren können.

Dazu kommt das Problem mit der Dekohärenz, dem Kollabieren der Superposition. Algorithmen müssen oft Fallunterscheidungen und Vergleiche von Variablen durchführen.

Als Programmierer weiß man, wie wichtig if-Statements sind. Und jetzt kommt der Haken, würde man auf einem Quanten-Computer zum Beispiel eine Zahl auf 0 testen wollen, würde höchst wahrscheinlich die Superposition kollabieren, da der Test auf einen konkreten Wert eine Art Messung darstellen würde. Die Natur müsste sich dann festlegen, welchen Wert die qubits zu dem Zeitpunkt besitzen, die Superposition und der Quantum-Advantage würde dann verloren gehen.

Stellt euch als Programmierer vor, ihr hättet einen Computer ohne Speicher, dürftet keine Fall-Unterscheidungen implementieren und könntet nur mit ein paar Integer-Zahlen mit einer geringen Anzahl an Bits rechnen. Dafür mit allen Werten parallel, könntet dann aber wieder nur ein zufälliges Ergebnis auslesen.

Selbst wenn Quanten-Computer existieren würden, wäre es sehr schwer damit nützliche Berechnungen zu implementieren. Niemand weiß genau, wie man mit diesen Einschränkungen außer dem Shor-Algorithmus, der in der Praxis wegen dem Noise nicht funktioniert, irgendetwas Sinnvolles berechnen könnte.

Eine andere Idee ist, dass man Quanten-Computer wegen den ganzen Einschränkungen eher für Simulationen für quanten-mechanische Experimente verwenden könnte. Aber auch hier bin ich ein bisschen skeptisch, wie das genau gehen soll und ob man das nicht mittlerweile mit KI besser und billiger simulieren könnte.

Andererseits kann man es auch als Henne-Ei-Problem sehen. Würde es funktionierende Quanten-Computer geben, würde man vielleicht Anwendungsfälle für Quanten-Computer finden, die wirklich etwas bringen.

Aber auch klassische Computer werden immer besser und können immer mehr Berechnungen parallel durchführen.

Was sagt ihr dazu? Denkt ihr, dass man über künstliche Benchmarks hinaus, einen konkreten sinnvollen Anwendungsfall für Quanten-Computer finden wird?

According to Alan Turing, for a computer to perform useful calculations, it needs two things: memory and the ability to perform logical operations on the memory, including reading and storing information.

And this is where the problem of the usefulness of quantum computers begins. Apart from the qubits themselves, quantum computers have no real memory on which they can operate.

Then there is the problem of decoherence, the collapse of the superposition. Algorithms often have to perform case distinctions and comparisons of variables.

As a programmer, you know how important if statements are. And now comes the catch: if you wanted to test a number for 0 on a quantum computer, for example, the superposition would most likely collapse, as the test for a concrete value would represent a kind of measurement. Nature would then have to determine what value the qubits have at that point in time, the superposition and the quantum advantage would be lost.

Imagine as a programmer that you had a computer without memory, were not allowed to implement case distinctions and could only calculate with a few integer numbers with a small number of bits. You could do this with all values in parallel, but then again you could only read out a random result.

Even if quantum computers existed, it would be very difficult to implement useful calculations with them. Nobody knows exactly how you could calculate anything useful with these limitations apart from Shor's algorithm, which doesn't work in practice because of quantum noise.

Another idea is that quantum computers could be used more for simulations for quantum mechanical experiments because of all the limitations. But here, too, I'm a bit skeptical about how exactly this would work and whether it couldn't be simulated better and more cheaply with AI in the meantime.

On the other hand, you can also see it as a chicken-and-egg problem. If there were functioning quantum computers, we would perhaps find applications for quantum computers that really make a difference.

But classical computers are also getting better and better and can perform more and more calculations in parallel.

Interessante Diskussion, aber auch viele persönliche Angriffe, habe den deutschen Text selber geschrieben, nicht mit KI. Ich denke, dass Quanten-Computer overhyped und die Bedenken berechtigt sind, ist aber ein sehr komplexes Thema. In der jetzigen Form sind QC nicht Turing-complete, aber es gibt in der Forschung theoretische Ansätze QC Turing-complete zu machen. https://epubs.siam.org/doi/abs/10.1137/S0097539796300921
