The King's Repentance

Hello, there Hiver’s! The name’s Virgoxsy! Kumusta! I hope you are all doing well these past few days! In today's blog, I'll be presenting a short narrative that I recently completed. It might not be as nice as you expected it to be, but I hope you'll like it!

The Kingdom of Northern Vale has been experiencing cold and rainy weather for the past month. Their ever-busy streets were now a road of misery due to murky ground, with rain pouring non-stop at every roof in the village. The kids were all locked inside their houses, for the streets were too slippery to step into; even carriages pulled by horses weren’t able to cross. Vendors selling a variety of merchandise on the streets are now all gone because it was impossible to sell something amidst the rain.

After 1 month of rain pouring nonstop, the villagers were starting to lose all their food supplies they stocked, which were supposedly consummated after two weeks, but due to them scrimping their food, they were able to hold out for another two weeks. The kingdom was in a huge dilemma; the advisors of the king weren’t able to construct a more detailed strategy or solution to the crisis they were facing until an anonymous person stepped into the receiving area of the castle wearing a brown, ragged cloak drenched with rain. He had a scrawny body, which you could already tell was due to his extreme hunger. His face looked haggard and exhausted, and as you look closely, half of his tan face is covered with dark spots, which usually causes people to mistake him for someone who is related to witches or witchcraft.

The King of Northern Vale sits proudly on his well-furnished chair with both hands placed on the arm of the chair and his right leg crossed in front of him. As he eyes the newly arrived person in the castle, he can’t help but feel disgust at his features. Why is someone as ugly as this able to approach him easily, he thought? Even if he wanted to dismiss the stranger in front of him, he couldn’t because many eyes are watching him, and with one wrong move, the goody-two-shoes reputation he built for years would go to waste.

He moved towards the stranger and asked him with a disgusted face what his reason was for barging into the castle at such a critical time. The stranger then started talking about how he could solve the outburst of rain in the kingdom. Then a loud sound could be heard echoing in each corner of the castle; it was the king's ominous laugh. His laugh lasted for about 30 seconds, then he faced the stranger with a scorched face. "And how can we trust some lowly being such as you?" What if you're just merely spitting unreliable information?" the king stated with eyes piercing into the soul of the stranger.

The stranger was caught off guard by the king’s sudden outburst and ended up uttering not even a single word. He knows for a fact that the king's attitude wasn’t pleasing, but he never anticipated it to be this heinous. Before he could say anything, the king ordered his guards to escort him out of his castle, and without a word, the guards grabbed him by his arms and forcefully dragged him out.

The stranger was then enveloped by the lingering cold, humid air of the Northern Vale, with rain pouring on him, which made his cloak drenched to the point it was unbearable to wear. He then formed an x with his arms on his chest, producing a tiny warmth for himself, and glanced at the enormous castle and the village that surrounded it. how pitiful this town is. He thought. He then walked towards the stables, where horses were placed. He walked for minutes looking for a horse to ride on and eventually chose the black horse at the end of the stable. and then rode off towards where the sunrises were.

Another month passed, yet the rain in the northern valley didn’t stop. The villagers have nothing to eat, and their houses are now flooded. The people were now banging on the castle gates with anger towards their incompetent king.

The situation inside the castle gates wasn’t as good as they thought it would be. A few days ago, they sent a letter to the eastern continent, where lies the emerging Kingdom of Corinthia. It is a kingdom bearing bountiful harvests each year and is declared one of the most competent kingdoms there is in all the land. Yet, to their huge disappointment, their request for assistance had been denied by their newly crowned king, King Ruther. The King of Northern Vale was furious and threw a tantrum by throwing vases and anything that fell into his grasp. After an hour of extreme anger, he then demanded an audience with the King of Corinthia. But before the guards can deliver the message to King Ruther, a loud marching sound can be heard outside the castle gates.

He knew for a fact that those marches weren’t made by just normal citizens. But before he could gather his thoughts, one of his guards suddenly came running.

"My King!" he said as he bowed his head before continuing.

"The King of Corinthia is at the castle gates with 10 carriages filled with food supplies and clothing," the guard uttered, leaving the King puzzled. I mean, it doesn’t make sense that King Ruther would send help for his kingdom, knowing that King Ruther declined his request for assistance not too long ago. And the thought that the King himself even came along with the supplies made him even more confused. Being born as someone spoiled and selfish due to a lack of his parents' attention, that kind of deed wasn’t something he was taught or knew from the beginning. After collecting his thoughts, he then went off to the receiving area to greet the King of Corinthia.

As he entered the room, he was welcomed by his guards and lady in waiting, who were bowing their heads, which shows respect in their kingdom. He just nodded as he passed by them. He then saw King Ruther, and they greeted each other with a bow. King Ruther was rather a dashing man; there would be no doubt ladies from different kingdoms would fall head over heels for him. But despite his dashing appearance, his eyes hold a blazing fire, and surely with just one look from him, you’d go down melting before him.

"I apologize for the shabby welcome. "I would have prepared extravagantly if you had told me you were coming here today," stated King Stefan rudely. Yet King Ruther didn’t seem bothered by the way Stefan acted; rather, he just smiled cheekily at him.

"It’s not a problem, King Stefan." I was just concerned about the citizens of this kingdom; that’s why I came bearing food supplies and clothing for them." After hearing what King Ruther said, Stefan felt frustrated and useless.

"I mean, King Ruther, I’m just utterly confused why you have come bearing supplies when not too long ago you declined my request for assistance." Stefan said it without stuttering.

"Oh that! When I sent the message that I declined the assistance, a stranger appeared out of nowhere, barging inside my castle. He was wearing a cloak drenched with rain. He pleaded that I rebuke my decision and send some supplies. He explained how the situation is in your kingdom and how the people are suffering each day." King Ruther stated:

By hearing King Rutherford's words, there’s only one person he thought of. The strange-looking man whom he threw out of his castle weeks ago

"Oh, is that so? May I ask where he is now?" stated Stefan.

"I actually don’t know; after he told me about your situation, the day after that, he was gone. I told my knights to look for him, but to my dismay, he wasn’t found." said King Ruther as he sipped some red wine prepared by the maids.

Hearing this, Stefan felt guilty because of how he treated that strange man before. He wished to thank that man for what he had done for him and for his kingdom.

Since that day, King Stefan has learned to accept everyone regardless of their physical appearance or social rank.

This is quite a relatable story. In our modern society, power seekers are fond of making their followers suffer what they have in abundance because of personal interest. 

Most people would have even paid the highest price before a change would come.
