"Musk going wild?" - from freedom of speech activism to the opposite

Elon Musk recently decided to ban links from Substack on Twitter by marking them as "unsafe," which some speculate was due to Substack's debut of a product called Notes that Musk viewed as a rival to Twitter.

This move caused outrage among Substack writers, who rely heavily on Twitter to promote their work. However, others believe Musk was targeting Substack's founder, Hamish McKenzie, due to a past working relationship and a book written by McKenzie about Musk. After considerable backlash, Musk reversed the ban, but this incident highlighted the vulnerability of the platform and its dependence on Twitter. The situation raises questions about the accountability and regulation of social media companies, their monopolistic behaviors, and the political influence of Big Tech.

Claire Berlinski from the Cosmopolitan Globalist Substack blog has expressed concerns over the potential transformation of Twitter into an "everything app" like China's WeChat, doubting Musk's ability to manage such a platform. It highlights that Twitter has begun amplifying Chinese state media and Kremlin accounts, despite earlier policies to restrict the reach of such accounts. The text also claims that Twitter has downranked information from Ukrainian accounts while allowing the circulation of leaked US national security documents. In summary, the author views Musk's acquisition and management of Twitter as dangerous, irresponsible, and a threat to Western democracies.

In her article for the Bulwark, Cathy Young criticizes Elon Musk's management of Twitter, accusing him of arbitrarily restricting access to the platform, undermining freedom of speech, and displaying hostility towards journalists and activists. She also mentions Twitter's compliance with the authoritarian demands of the Indian government and the platform's downranking of tweets related to the Ukraine crisis. The author proposes two potential solutions to limit Musk's influence: a mass exodus from Twitter to Substack or a collective Twitter strike urging Musk to relinquish management control. The author encourages readers to join the movement to oust Musk from power, emphasizing that users built the platform and have the power to change its management.

What do you think about the current situation?
