# Eine musikalische Matinee – Kein Jazz! Aber dennoch extrem spannend!

For a long time now, today's matinee will once again be dedicated to a single artist. What makes it even more exciting is the fact that all jazz purists will now be throwing their hands up in despair, but that won't stop me from focusing on Stromae, who knows how to merge thoughtful lyrics with exciting music like almost no other.

> Die heutige Matinee steht seit längerer Zeit wieder einmal ganz im Zeichen eines einzigen Künstlers. Was die Sache noch spannender macht, ist die Tatsache, dass alle Jazz-Puristen nun voller Verzweiflung die Hände über dem Kopf zusammenschlagen werden, was mich jedoch nicht davon abhält, den Fokus auf **Stromae** zu richten, der durchdachte Lyrik wie kaum ein anderer mit spannender Musik zu verschmelzen weiß.

‘Art has never produced style, and style has never produced art. The youngest face of the New Beat Generation is the internationally renowned Stromae, who released his debut album “Cheese” in 2010. The song ’Alors on danse" was written in response to the 2008 financial crisis, which triggered global poverty and unemployment. In it, the Belgian musician addresses the hopelessness of a simple wage earner who, despite hard work and debt, tries to forget his worries by dancing. The track was released in 2009.

It is followed by “Formidable.” In this song, half ballad, half electro-pop shock anthem, a drunk man recounts how his girlfriend left him because he cannot conceive children. Now he's standing on the street, frustratedly hitting on young women and complaining to them about his woes. So in 2013, Stromae goes to the Louise tram stop in downtown Brussels, pretends to be drunk for half a day, repeatedly lies down on the tram tracks, staggers over to women and hits on them, and secretly has everything filmed on cell phone cameras.

The unbelievably emotional song “Papaoutai” reveals the reason for these lyrics in its title. Papa, where are you? Stromae's father was one of the victims of the 1994 genocide in Rwanda. An enduring experience for the young son, which influenced his life so strongly that an untimely departure from life could not be ruled out. The result was a retreat into isolation and no explanation for his absence from the stage.

This phase of life is reflected in “L'enfer” (Hell), in which he explicitly deals with his suicidal thoughts. Regarding this, he says: "I'm not very proud of them. Sometimes you think that this is the only way to silence them—these thoughts that have made my life hell. But that's how I see life. It's never completely black and white. You have difficult moments and happy moments. You don't have lows without highs. And I'm not alone in feeling lonely. Everything I thought about—it's crazy how many people had the same thoughts. But even that doesn't help me feel less alone."
