# Wie kam die Orgel (ganz ohne J.S.Bach) in den Jazz?

Today I introduce you to an artist who was once considered a child prodigy. His parents claim (who would have expected otherwise) that Cory was playing the organ and piano by the age of two. That may be laughable. But there can be no doubt that he made his debut at the famous Apollo Theatre at the age of six.

Heute stelle ich euch einen Künstler vor, von dem einst behauptet wurde, er sei ein Wunderkind. Seine Eltern behaupten (wer hätte es anders erwartet), dass Cory bereits im Alter von zwei Jahren Orgel und Klavier spielte. Das mag zum Lachen sein. Aber dass er im Alter von sechs Jahren im berühmten Apollo Theater debütierte, kann nicht mehr bezweifelt werden.

As soon as he finished school, he started working in various studios with Yolanda Adams, Stanley Brown, Israel Houghton, P. Diddy, Kirk Franklin, Kenny Garrett (at the age of 19, Henry was a permanent member of Garrett's touring band for three years), Donnie McClurkin, Boyz II Men, Michael McDonald, Bruce Springsteen, The Roots and many others.

Kaum hatte er die Schule beendet, begann er in den verschiedensten Studios mit Yolanda Adams, Stanley Brown, Israel Houghton, P. Diddy, Kirk Franklin, Kenny Garrett (der 19-jährige Henry war drei Jahre lang festes Mitglied von Garretts Tourband), Donnie McClurkin, Boyz II Men, Michael McDonald, Bruce Springsteen, The Roots und vielen anderen zu arbeiten.

When it comes to comparisons, the same names always come up. Oscar Peterson, Art Tatum, Jimmy Smith or Billy Preston. I am convinced that Cory Henry has gone his own way. You can hear it on albums like "Leave You Allone" or "Gotcha Now Doc".

Since 2012, Henry has been a member of the acclaimed experimental jazz and funk ensemble Snarky Puppy, with whom he won a Grammy for Best R&B Performance in 2014 and a Grammy for Best Contemporary Instrumental Album in 2015. In 2016, Henry released his solo album “The Revival”.
