Homestead Life: Spring Garden Journal (Spring Garlic Experiment / Rosa Rugosa Propagation / Raspberry Fields)
## Hello Spring! I am finally spending my days outdoors again. Winter was longer than I ever remember it being around here. We had snow on the ground for over SIX MONTHS!

### I love all of the seasons but winter was greedy this year. On the far edges of the property there's still some snow, a reminder of what was and how quickly things change. Mother spring has finally awoken and we are deeply grateful.

Our muscles are burning and we are sleeping heavily at night as our bodies try to recover from the long days of work. I just love it!

#### Come walk with me through some of our gardens! :)
<br>

![IMG_4910.jpg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmdJrzM8DmgY2s7RuCkcJU2rgF6ofbTqdUU8Q9FTiqRBYn/IMG_4910.jpg)

The first thing I did was plant garlic. Something crazy happened last fall - we didn't get our hardneck garlic planted! We've never planted garlic in the spring. I am quite interested (and hopeful )to see how this goes.

![IMG_4943.jpg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmSmL3zKbLdCVBcCzvxXrgXxQTpnwujXQiYfqq7V7NmwQx/IMG_4943.jpg)

Here's a garlic clove that was planted in the autumn (by planted I mean dropped on the ground) showing how far the development would be had we fall planted. You gain a lot with a fall planting but I am still optimistic that this spring planted crop will flourish.

![IMG_4906.jpg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmZg7sKX61FNugQhr2onj8aD1i89oQLyDahuFB673an7uG/IMG_4906.jpg)

These two hens are from our original flock. Survivors to the end. They used to hate each other but now they've become begrudging companions, I suppose five years of living together will do that. They've been busy pecking and turning over the soil in the garden beds all spring.

![IMG_6352-1024x683.jpg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmXUupeNEL7WRJuGhDtHUTdhMTYfbBQcxdk2ZLcmMh5oUS/IMG_6352-1024x683.jpg)

The chicken run broke beyond repair and had to be completely dismantled. I really loved it but I've learned a few lessons about construction since doing this project. They've been running wild which I have to put a stop to now that we've planted seeds. I'll make a new run that leads them to the fenced in pasture. They've got loads of space and it keeps them out of trouble.

![IMG_4922.jpg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmfAWUdubQyVWdph9yD6HCw5GSZvU6n3AKkCS4NaxMk4sZ/IMG_4922.jpg)

This is our original raspberry and blackberry nursery. The first things we planted when we moved to our homestead. From the original 9 blackberry canes and 12 raspberry canes. We keep digging up suckers and transplanting them elsewhere.

![IMG_4932.jpg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmdFDmciQURUtVLubZA7iMqS7w8wZavP1KvTPnb6gvBHQD/IMG_4932.jpg)

It's really hard to see in the photo but this field is full of raspberry and blackberry canes. We've planted hundreds over the past two years. Not bad when you consider that small original investment. We've been pretty lazy about this, pulling them up and literally sticking them in the field with no more attention than that.

At the very back is our bio-char pit. We are thinking of turning this into another Hugelkultur bed.

![IMG_4941.jpg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmULeCJQyFFSekHk954BU5U1GP4TbJYt9XgdjYnS3hrKEu/IMG_4941.jpg)

The greenhouse has seen better days. It's on the list of things to repair but with our cold climate we've got until June to get it sorted out for tomatoes and other delicates.

![IMG_4912.jpg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmfMxRrPJowfcxAYvEREQqUi3xT7TaiHZGAZzLDGBohjfm/IMG_4912.jpg)

Chamomile - and it came back! I can't stop smelling it and laughing because I've never before had perennial chamomile in my garden or lived in a climate where it would survive winter. Its a herb lovers dream come true.

![IMG_4927.jpg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmS2e8WeJV9uvYvKarGr9if1SRdt7tentHT8EdPxDeHFas/IMG_4927.jpg)

This is my husbands old pig pasture. He raised four pigs our first summer, we loved them, they were cool, and when all was said and done it was heart breaking - not for us. He does not eat pork anymore and I don't eat meat anyhow so it's all for the best.

This pasture, shelter and all is now going to become a garden and I am so excited. The shelter is going to be turned into a bee station. It's going to take some work to get this area cleaned up, planted. It is a huge area and a bit overwhelming but bit by bit we'll get it done.

![IMG_4945.jpg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmacyAVaLfP1ox93bGnGXYxm7j5HunmLVKyt81hpV1kEaS/IMG_4945.jpg)

The Rosa Rugosa bushes took a beating over the winter. The snow was so heavy snapping many braches. We've pruned a mountain of stems away and all the bushes look healthy albeit a bit sparse. Fortunately we have a lot of rose bushes on the property.

While cleaning up I noticed at least 50 little suckers shooting up in random places. We are trying something new. When you sever the root that connects the sucker to the parent plant with the blade of a sharp spade and leave it in the ground, it should develop it's own root system, then you can transplant them with ease. roses have become an important part of my life, we make a lot of beautiful products with them and hope to sell them this fall at the local market and on our online @homesteaderscoop shop.

![IMG_4948.jpg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmYNivBMae56kkJHnnHSX5MiaV4ih4AaABZr8Pxq2gwfHL/IMG_4948.jpg)

The pile on the far right are all cuttings from one rose bush! In front of the rose bush is the main lavender patch. The building is the original home on the property, it now houses all the solar/generator type stuff.

![IMG_4963.jpg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmSeFHx3M13D8pv4y6K5xSwHvhdrdBAd6HV4nf8LpqAUQh/IMG_4963.jpg)

Early spring view of the garden.

![IMG_4970.jpg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQma9jbgYfDNGZt8EDMhTBwKric9vwsBEeKJovH21uLBaxV/IMG_4970.jpg)

The Raised bed garden. The first round of cool weather seeds are all planted, just in time for a good spring rain shower. Carrots, beets, parsnip, kale, radish, garlic, amaranth, sorrel, chicory, and all kinds of other things! The soil is too wet still to plant in the in ground gardens.

Your sprouting garlic DID make me laugh... ours do that in the kitchen within a week - 9 months of the year I have to store it in the fridge. LOL. Such different techniques and so interesting to see the diversity in styles and approaches to gardening and homesteading. Your Mr Scarecrow is one handsome dude!

@goldenoakfarm ·
I did plant the hardneck one spring. It came up, did fine, but was much smaller than autumn planted garlic.

Loved seeing all you've gotten done and the tour. Turns out, no pigs for us this year. :(( Just the 95 birds in the brooder.

I am amazed the lavender survived at yours. The ones I planted last year all died, as has nearly every other lavender I've planted.

It's rained nearly every day here this spring. Today it's not supposed to, and I'm planning to be in the gardens.

I am hoping we can leave it an extra month and harvest September. I don't want small garlic but I'll take what I can get! This batch is just for us anyhow so I am relieved to know it worked for you. Oh wow! 95 birds? I am down to two! We haven't added new chicks in quite a few years now. I wouldn't have space/shelter for that many!! Enjoy your garden day. It's sunny today for us as well so I'll be doing the same!

Country living has a lot going for it! :) No, I have never made black garlic. @riverflows posted about it recently and it is on my list of things to try. We cook with garlic quite a lot and also plan to sell some at market.

*You've been visited by @sagescrub from Homesteaders Co-op.*

**I love your enthusiasm for spring! Last year we planted garlic in the spring and it did pretty well, although not all of the bulbs got as big as they may have - but many did. I think you'll get some good garlic! How fun that you have so many exciting projects lined up for the year including a new garden!**

@riverflows ·
Loved this walk around your place. I am jealous of all the berry canes. Mine are a weedy mess and I struggle watering them in the summer. Weird we are planting garlic at the sameish time. A spring planting wouldn't work for us as it gets too dry in the summer. Great news abput the chamomile. Our winters are mild enough that most herbs survive. 6 months of snow is inconceivable to me.
