I was outside adding some wood to our furnace and as I watched the flames of the fire I started thinking about everyone's obsession with being busy. It seems as though everyone is so busy today that the preferred mode of connecting is through quick one line discussions via text. Often people are multi tasking & talking to multiple people all at once. I'm sure we've all had a comment pop up that wasn't intended for us. You know what I mean? Or you've sat at a table as someone furiously types on their phone. You're together, but you aren't totally connected. You can tell when you've only got a fraction of someone's attention, in person or in text. This type of interaction is pretty much expected these days, but it's quite unfullfilling. I also started thinking about how people often come to our homestead to recharge and "get away from it all." They bring their numerous devices: cell phones and tablets. Everyone will be sitting at the table talking and having fun and then all of a sudden the ipad will come out and they'll disappear right before your eyes absorbed in the news, gossip, what people are saying on facebook and all that. Someone else will be glancing down at their phone while they chat. Holy cow are we that boring I think to myself. ## Is this really going to be the new normal?

So, this got me thinking about a few things that happened recently that made me feel a bit bummed out. Only temporarily I should add, I know kindness was intended. My mum sent a parcel a while ago for my birthday and I didn't receive it. I've been going to the post office to no avail. It turns out she used my maiden name on the parcel. I've been married for 16 years but no biggie I agree, easy mistake.... On top of this a close friend send me a parcel for Christmas (so sweet!) and it ended up getting returned to her. She had sent it to my old from five years ago in a totally different province address. I was admittedly feeling a bit sensitive when this happened twice in a row, it felt very negative. I know they care about me it's just ...what's the deal? Am I fading away here? I think that the issue is that everyone is so busy. So darn busy. Incredibly busy. I hear it out of everyone's mouths. How are you? "really, really busy". It's the thing to be. ## Why is everyone so darn busy being so darn unhappy about being so darn busy?

I just think the world is crazy sometimes. I've got to tell you. I am craving deeper connections. Aren't you? This doesn't have to be the normal. Why not show people you care by leaving your phone behind. Devote your attention 100% to the person in front of you. Slow down a bit, learn to say no and embrace being unbusy. Heck, smell some roses too. ---
[@walkerland ] Building a greener, more beautiful world one seed at a time. I love this commentary on modern life. The distractions that come with being busy seem to be an excuse for people to not address why they are so unsatisfied with their life. I try not to be busy but take a lot of flak for it. At least I have peace of mind.

That is a good point. Being busy can be used as a distraction, a way to delay dealing with uncomfortable realities. A person can be incredibly productive and unbusy ... we've learned to slow down yet we still accomplish a lot of wonderful things as I am sure you do too. Enjoy that piece of mind maybe someday others will get tired and start following suit.

BUSY is the new black! I'm with you though... I wish it wasn't. (Also I'm sorry about your package woes) Maybe you could install a faraday cage around your home so nobody gets signal inside :D

Your words are so true. Sometimes i think we are actually living in one of those futuristic social dystopia's that have had so many films made of the "disconnect" between the citizens and big brother government. How would all these people cope if the system went down and they lost the use of all their mobile devices?
