Tempting Fate, a Survival Story

Not everyone can say they have had a broken nose but I can. I can gladly confirm that I never felt it coming.

Those of you who've known me for some length of time are familiar with my pedestrian / car accident April 9, 2000. My car slid off the road on black ice and I found myself walking. I walked to the edge of the road around 11:00 pm after my car landed in the field.

At the berm of the road I had an instinct that it wasn't safe there so I backed off and retreated back into the field and kept walking toward my house.

The next thing I know I woke up laying face-down in a muddy field wearing my dress, my little leather jacket and my sandals. I had no memory of the accident I just felt that I had been bumped and that's how I ended up on the ground.

I got up and started walking towards the road again. Unbeknownst to me I was in shock because I had been hit by a car. Also, unbeknownst to me, my nose was broken; smashed completely to the left side of my face. I suffered lacerations on my face caused by the shattered glass of the driver side mirror of the Geo Metro that my face broke off as I rolled the cars hood on impact to land in the field unconscious.

My right leg fractured in two places. I never knew what hit me because the car was also thrown off the road by the same black ice that threw my car into the field. The young woman told the police that although she saw me walking in front of her in her headlights she froze with shock at the wheel and just struck me.

I am living proof that God watches out for His people. He saved my life and provided a sense of peace as I walked back towards the road.

Fortunately, the young woman turned her car back around and came back to pick me up. It was very cold and snowing that night.

Another pedestrian an hour or so away from me was the victim of a hit and run and he was left to die in the town of Northeast, Pennsylvania.

Like many people who suffer accidents mine has left repercussion. I deal with them; migraines and other hip ailments, but I am eternally grateful that I am still on this Earth to be able to tell the story.
