Word to the Wise

I enjoy laughter and do my utmost to hide my ill humor when at all possible,  but everyone has bad moments and digressions into that unsavory state of ill humor. I can be in a great mental state and be happy in whatever place I'm located,  but I'm not immune to other people's negative vibes.  I'm human,  too.

Going into work today I was already struggling and combating migraine which struck in the parking lot at work.  Dealing with the public over the phones is a guaranteed buzz kill for any good mood when I'm at top form, but starting out with migraine can become a recipe for disaster.  One cranky customer can leave me with raveled nerves and tension which further erodes my already taught nerves.

I had a caller who was irate because his emergency benefits were costly on his group insurance and he now received a bill for $1200 which included $250 for a copay plus deductible and 20% coinsurance.  The salt on his wound was the misdiagnosis.  Two days later he visited a doctor and received more charges. This time he was correctly diagnosed for a fraction of the cost. I provided an explanation and the appeal address as well as advice on dealing directly with the facility who saw him for five minutes who was billing him the exorbitant fee. He was so distressed and fluctuating from anger to frustration and I empathized deeply.  He apologized to me multiple times for taking it out on me, but really he was just expressing his shock and disappointment. The call ended well, but his long call trying to understand the emergency room coverage baffled him and drained me totally.

The lesson for today is know your benefits and options and choose carefully.  Urgent Care Services are cheaper than Emergency Rooms and use them when you can. The convenience of an emergency room visit will drain your wallet every time.

It's very difficult to know your benefits. In fact, it is sometimes impossible for the patient to find out what a service will cost until after it has been performed! The more expensive the service, the more difficult it is to find out. And then there are the times when you think you know what you will be charged and it turns out to be much much more simply because you didn't know there were so many pieces to it. 
I'm sure it is very hard on both ends of this conversation, and on both ends the caller is sick. Not easy!

I agree..@owasco it's very difficult to know your benefits and even more difficult if you don't spend any time reading the benefit booklet. At least a general overview of the book can help a person understand what the service is subject to. As far as pricing goes for hospital care, we don't have access to facility pricing and there's a care cost estimator on the member website that will give them a general idea on how much professional fees might cost based on estimates made by previous claims. Calling your insurance pre-service is the best way to go to assure knowing whether it's even covered. It's a shame that health insurance costs as much as it does! We already have the sneak peek that are current benefit deductibles on some of the plans are going up for next year. My wages never go up enough to match the rising of costs in both medical and pharmaceutical benefits so it's a vicious circle of staying in place. Thank you for stopping in reading.❀
