  # <center>Merienda (Snack) "Malagkit and Sapin-Sapin"</center> In our culture, we sometimes have afternoon snacks. It could come in many forms like noodles, porridge and rice cakes. Today I will share with you two of our local delicacies my wife bought for our afternoon snack.  ### Malagkit Malagkit means sticky and was named for this dessert. Also, the main ingredient for this dessert is rice called Malagkit (Glutinous Rice). This dessert is popular in our area and when visitors come to our city they always buy this as a pasalubong. What is "Pasalubong"? It is a local term used when you buy or take home something for your loved ones. Ingredients: Glutinous Rice, sugar and coconut milk. Cost: 110 pesos ($2.30 USD)  The sweet smell of the dessert will greet you once you open the box.  The top is layered with a caramel-like glaze and is almost like the glaze of sweet ham.  You will need to cut the Malagkit in square portions for easy serving. 15 portions can be made with one box. If you cannot finish the whole box in two days it is recommended to be refrigerated.  The Malagkit has been with us for a long time already. Since I was very small my grandparents already bring home the Malagkit. I also recall that we once visited the store to see how they were made. Until now the taste remains the same and I'm sure once you taste it you will keep coming back for more.  ### Sapin-Sapin The Sapin-Sapin is also one of the popular desserts in our country. It has multi-layered colors that make it attractive. Although each color does not have a different taste. Ingredients: Glutinous Rice flour, sugar, coconut milk, evaporated milk and egg Cost: 130 pesos ($2.72 USD)  One box contains 12 wrapped pieces and includes a pack of toasted shredded coconut.  The shredded coconut will be used to sprinkle on top of the Sapin-Sapin.  You could also put it in a small saucer and you can dip the Sapin-Sapin while you eat.  Each is wrapped in oiled plastic as this dessert is very sticky.  There is not a lot of purple food around but here in the Philippines, we have a couple. Food ranging from ice cream, cakes and purple yam desserts.   Once the wrapper is removed just sprinkle the toasted coconut on top and you are ready for the treat.  It is best to not remove it from the wrapper so you can clean your plate easier. As I mentioned earlier that is very sticky.  Although I prefer the Malagkit over the Sapin-Sapin it remains an all-time favorite here in the Philippines.
