A coin for every occasion: 11th June 1509 - Henry VIII marries Catherine of Aragon (His first wife).

Throughout the month of June, ill be looking back at historical moments from the past. From conflicts to coronations, sporting moments to royal memories, and famous firsts and lasts, with my love of all things shiny and precious, ill be trying to tie these events in with coins that have been created to commemorate these moments.

Catherine of Aragon became the first wife of Henry VIII on 11 June 1509. An influential woman, in 1507 she was made ambassador of the Aragonese Crown – the first female ambassador in Europe’s history.

Once married to Henry VIII, she served a vital role in leading the country. When acting as regent whilst the king was in France, she gave a rousing speech about courage that led the English to victory in the Battle of Flodden.

The 1509 groat is the traditional name of a defunct English and Irish silver coin worth four pence, and also a Scottish coin which was originally worth fourpence, with later issues being valued at eightpence and one shilling.

The abbreviated Latin legends translate as on the obverse, "Henry, by the grace of God, King of England and France." and on the reverse as "I have made God my helper" a Psalm from the Bible.
