As the story of Judas Iscariot's betrayal of Jesus Christ goes, its one of the most poignant and debated tales from that big old book some people like to read. Central to his betrayal is the thirty pieces of silver that Judas received in exchange for handing over Jesus to the authorities. To truly understand the gravity of this transaction, it's crucial to delve into the significance of silver in the time of Jesus and grasp its worth to Judas. So how much did ol' Jude really give up his mukka for??

In the ancient world, silver, like today, held immense economic and cultural importance. It was a primary medium of exchange, used for not just trade, but for commerce, and as a measure of wealth and store of value. Silver coins, such as the denarius and the shekel, circulated widely in the region, facilitating transactions and serving as symbols of financial stability.

The shekel is referenced in the New Testament as the currency Judas received, and was a very  prominent silver coin of the time. Its value varied, but it was generally equivalent to about four drachmas, a Greek currency commonly used in the eastern Mediterranean aroumd those dates. While not exorbitant, thirty shekels represented a substantial sum, especially for a man of humble origins like Judas.

To comprehend the significance of thirty pieces of silver, you must forst consider its purchasing power back in Jesus' time. A denarius, another silver coin in circulation, was typically the wage for a day's labor. By this measure, thirty shekels would equate to roughly four months' worth of wages for an average laborer, an amount not to be dismissed lightly.

Knowing the weights and silver content of the [SHEKEL](1) , we can extrapolate out, and make an accurate assumption of what Judas would have been paid, equivalent in todays money.

We know that:

+ 30 SHEKELS = 88.8 DENARIUS 

By using todays equivalent of average wage, here in the UK of £34000, we can work out that each day = £130

So Judas sold out his friend for 88.8 X £130 = £11,540.

That's 13 troy oz. of silver.
As a Stacker for almost ten years that really isn't a lot of of silver at today's prices. In those days a Roman Denarius coin represented a days labor in the fields or a soldier's wage.
