Writing, Gaming and a lot of other industries have the same kind of pay scale. You are either rich or poor. There are very few who are making a living wage in these fields. You are a best seller or a struggling artist. Or you an esports pro or spending a lot of time of a hobby. But can blockchain fix that. Lets look at both cases. Writing: The only example we have for this is steemit. I can tell you as a writer it is more lucrative to write here than it is to write short stories. Even if you get professionally published you are looking at 6 cents a word. Some pay 10-25. But even with that you are not making a lot of money for the work you are putting in. Trust me. Short story writing is time consuming and a real piece can take a long time to perfect. Then you have to send it out and wait for a response. However with steemit you can get rewards instantly. Now yes we need to make changes for this site to make it more fair for more people. But this site shows it works. If we build a couple of sites for writers it might be possible to have a way for them to make to make a living wage. Gaming: Streaming has started to close the gap on this. Twitch is helping people make enough to get by. But a blockchain system can add not one but several layers to it. You can tip, get a reward pool, trade you assets and win tournaments that do not need to be pro level. I think we can start to fill the distance in the upcoming months.

I would agree. We're closing the gap but still a lot more work to do. We're definitely in the right direction.

Blogging has provided a lot independence to writers but the real question would be to get it on the blockchain, like Steemit platform. With blockchain we solve the issues like direct payment to authors and fair pay. (I think Yumerium token would be going for tipping and such on the blockchain. )

I think by writing you mean blogging. Because otherwise, if you're writing a book and you get published, you get money from royalties over a lifetime. Steemit income ends after a week. Blogging, i agree, there is more to be made from blogging purely for the content. If one adds advertising, then it will be even better. Gaming, again not sure what you're pointing to but game developers make a lot of money. Unless its an app that never got traction. But i have not seen a gaming app built om steemit.

Being an engineering graduate and not willing to join a job, I could totally relate to the context of this article. The condition is particularly critical here in India and the hopes from platforms like these are sky high. Your post is very true because although people in writing and gaming are very famous, that is only the top 10% that outperform others. Let's hope that blockchain, and platforms like these could actually provide more opportunities to us.

I do a lot of writing. I started at an early age writing. From self published short story books that were sold at gas stations to poetry books (stop laughing), I have had the writing bug for most of my life. About 10 years ago I found a way to make decent money at it and started a public relations company. I hardly write original short stories or poetry anymore. Now I focus on game reviews, press releases, articles, and writing gaming manuals for clients. The only place I make more money writing for than on Steemit is through Upwork where I write a lot of press releases. I have been paid as much as $0.75 per word on a few (counting 24 hour rush fees). Not often but it does happen. Writing about games is something a lot of people misunderstand. They think that they should be making at least $0.10 per word or more - no matter the size of your site or revenue. I have experienced this first hand. I run three websites that cover gaming and general entertainment, then I manage another website for a gaming magazine. I see writers of all varieties and experience levels scoff at the rates offered (mostly revenue share because it is too easy to game the stats but not so easy to game Google Adsense or other advertisers). I am not sure about the value of writing for other genres outside of gaming but from what I understand, most independent bloggers go the sponsorship route to turn a profit on their content. Whether paid sponsors (which I work with from time to time) or paid advertisers (not as common as you might think) or paid with product, there are many sponsorships available to writers today. That is why so many branch out on their own and start their own sites. A big problem with getting advertisers to pay for placement is ad blockers and what steps site owners take to stop them. This is why most advertisers go for a link in the article rather than a banner on the site. Another problem is those few people that game the system. I had a writer that was obviously cheating the system to get her views up - on top of that, she was plagiarizing content from bigger sites. This was several years ago and it still looms over that sites head with Google Adsense for some reason. This is specifically why I offer only revenue share on my sites. It is just too easy to screw over the site owner if you are receiving a per view pay rate. If I could turn enough profit on the sites I would offer flat rate, which I have done in the past, but even at $0.01 to $0.08 a word, writers scoff and complain. If you write an average of 30 words per minute and are being paid $0.01 per word then congratulations! You are earning $18 an hour. I am not sure how that is an "unlivable wage" as I have been told it is but that is one excuse I hear often. A lot of people want to be paid like writers were prior to the Internet and that is simply not going to happen. The years of making $80k a year writing about games all day are over. Yes, I know many writers that were getting that in the 90's, many of which have been first to scoff at anything less. I think a lot of the trouble earning money writing can be laid at the feet of the writers. So many people are willing to write for free that it drives the price down for everyone. Before the Internet, the pool of writers was shallow. Now, one editor can manage 10 to 20 writers producing content daily for a website. This drives down the value of the words being written because the editor can simply skim and fix errors. Miss one? Simply fix it when it is pointed out. Couldn't do that in print.
