I always balance myself between two worlds or more. I don’t pick friends from the left or right, I try to think outside of a dichotomy. I like lazy people and hard workers, as long as they are happy with what they are doing. I am into a kind of anarcho-spirituality but I have friends who don’t think about that stuff at all and some friends who belong to an organized religion. 

I lived with a group of anti-capitalists who I call my family as I studied market trends and the future of finance. I prefer groups of mixed nationality and backgrounds but I love to hang out with a bunch of people from a specific culture with defined norms just to see how we can connect. 

Obviously I have my comfort zone and the people I enjoy the most. Those usually include mixed culture or those who want to mix up their culture and try new things, and who can appreciate artistic experimentation.  Sounds like me I guess. 

I went to a party last night. I wish I took pictures. The friend was there to see her boyfriend play.  The music was grimey lo-fi techno and punk. I liked it. My friend was so out of her comfort zone. 

It was actually really fun to see her out of her comfort zone cause she always steps up to the plate. 

She’s usually into yoga and meditation and self improvement and all that and most of her friends are aspiring social media influencers and entrepreneurs of the self-help variety.  She never drinks alcohol and stays away from loud crazy places. 

I guess she probably sees me as one of her crowd, but I never feel that way. I’m not the kind of guy who likes singing along to popular songs or watches Hollywood movies. I don’t want to be a snob, that stuff just absolutely nothing for me. The way most people feel when they watch a film with no dialogue or story is the way I feel about Mission Impossible.  That’s not to say I dislike her friends. I actually like them a lot as long, as long as I can dj.   

 I feel much comfortable with grimey punks and hippies than self-made business types, even though I am a few months away from being a self made business type. The fact is, I’m right in the middle of many many things. 

In the past she asked why I didn’t want to dance to her friends pop music....I told her it’s cause I can’t get into the music but she seemed to think I couldn’t let myself go and be in the moment. Last night I watched her feel exactly like I always feel. She was so confused by the music. “Why is there no melody?  I don’t get it”. 

“This is how I feel every time you are dancing to a simple melody pop song, it’s just hard for me to get into. You don’t have to force yourself to dance.”

But what I like about this friend is that she tried her best to have fun. Her boyfriend was busy talking to all the people who came to see him and so we spent most of the night talking in random groups or just the two of us. 

A lot of my friends see this friend as superficial and too normal because she likes taking photos for social media. To be honest, it weirds me out a little bit, but whatever. I can see past that into the core of this beautiful human being and let her explore life and society in a way she feels comfortable with because there is no rule book, and I like it that way. 

The fact that she can come understand my world and date a guy from my world, and her genuine interest in everyone says more about her than her desire to be able to call herself an “influencer”. She’s an awesome person, even if a lot of her behavior seems silly to me, she doesn’t have to conform to my way of doing things.
