I Found It!

I started remembering  that one of the dancer's husbands recorded something and went looking for it on YouTube.   It's one of the last times I played.  I didn't realize that what I mostly have saved are some photos but no videos that I can remember taking probably because we played mostly outside in city events, festivals, parades, fundraisers and 5K runs and I found it hard to capture the sound when playing outside.

It is always so engaging with the audience (me) with those tribal drums going in their presence. I know this is characteristic of them, but, still.. it is most enjoyable to watch and listen to.

You have captured an important part of them and I love it. What an honor to be part of such a group. Are you still doing this?

I haven't played or practiced for about 10 years.  Up until last year the only thing I did was to  play for the Cheyanne Mountain Zoo's big annual fundraiser where for a month I would practice and do pushups to get ready but I brought along drummers who play regularly and made me look good.  Because my drums had  been sitting in the garage all this time I sold and gave away most of them last summer.

Yes, The dancer or the clock let's the soloist who marks the dancers steps know when to up the tempo.  There is a signal piece in the rhythm called the "break" that lets the drummers know what to do and all throughout the dance lets the dancers know when to change the step or situation and to end the piece.

Short pieces like this we do for shows but to play for the average dance class a rhythm is played nonstop for about twenty minutes for a warm up which is not terribly hard to do but when drumming the main rhythm for the dance class we have to get prepared to play for forty-five minutes with the last fifteen to twenty minutes at jet speed.  I really have no interest in doing that anymore.

Oh yes thank you. It is very interesting to learn about. Like I was in high school band, but of course everything is sheet music.

From watching the video, I can really appreciate the mental concentration as well as the physical effort required! I swear I would be cramping up half way through! I always appreciate your time in answering! Except you didnt like my stink eye pic LOL. I dont blame you, it is pretty scary heheheh!!

For me there is something so relaxing about listening to drums like this in Summer here that have drum circles at the beach once a month which draws many drummers and a good crowd I try to catch it as many times as I can

I remember that's how it use to be for me too.  I would make it a point if not a destination to hear the drums.  I may post a little bit of "how to" join in on a drum circle and what makes one good.
