Junkanoo or John Canoe? (Part 2)

It is thought that John Canoe allowed his slaves to celebrate the day after Christmas, known as Boxing day, and New Years with their native music and no work.  They called it Boxing day because the left overs from the family's Christmas dinner were boxed and brought to them.  They played their music with conch shells, whistles, pans, and cowbells.  Competition grew between the families and parades evolved.

How wonderful!!  I didn't know that it was associated with Boxing Day!! But, how very festive this is and I can just imagine how that music sounds as it is parading down the street! I had forgotten that the Bahamas was part of the Commonweath. or once was.
