Whenever I see an advertisement involving zoos, I remember how “controversial” these places are for me. The idea of keeping animals imprisoned to the detriment of predatory capitalism (which here is “disguised” as a supposed “animal defense” that actually happens, but is not a central cause, and of entertainment for the public who can pay to have access to these places) irritates me a lot, because it's something brutal, even if it's well intentioned.

Yes, I already had the experience of visiting some zoos as a child and I remember that since then I didn't like them so much. In a way, I always thought about all those animals trapped outside their natural habitats and this brought me a certain sadness as I grew up and understood that scenario better. As an adult, I have never been to a zoo again and I confess that I no longer have the slightest desire (because I will feel the same things).

Even though I don't like these places, I can't say that I hate them either. I recognize that they are somewhat necessary for the survival of some species, but I know that at the essence of this idea, money moves the true intentions of those at the top of the capitalist pyramid. Fortunately there are many people within the pyramid who work brutally to do the best for these imprisoned animals and I have enormous respect for them.

Even though they are useful places for animals, I abhor the idea of making money from them. On the other hand, I understand the need to charge to maintain the entire physical structure of buildings, machines, food and other care for animals (in addition to the salaries of all professionals who deal directly with them during their working days). . I know they are antagonistic ideas, but at the same time, I think they are also complementary.

My thinking about zoos is even somewhat utopian in some aspects. For example, democratize access to them for everyone without mandatory payments. However, I know that this will never be possible unless through isolated initiatives that may be carried out by institutions. I really like seeing animals adapting and living in their natural environment in an organic way, without any interference or presence from humans.

I totally agree with you on how awful zoos can be in some instance. Although some species may rely on it to have a better survival, if that is the purspose, why not fund sanctuaries? Some zoos are so mismanaged that animals are so frail they are basically skin and bones.

Sanctuaries could be a great choice. In this case, I can only imagine millionaires (or billionaires) maintaining these spaces working.

I have a love/hate relationship with zoos. For one, it reminds me of the "human zoo" that was showcased in the US in the past. Very degrading to the royalties exhibited like exotic humans. The very same shame when exhibiting these royal beasts in an animal zoo.

However, a lot of endangered animals are being saved in human captivity. Maybe in nature's will it's their time to be wiped out of existence and forgotten, but in the name of science and learning, it would be great to keep them.

I can't even stand dogs in the cage, how much lions, elephants and birds that are meant to soar?

You make a good point here though when you look at it both ways.

But looking at the brighter side, some of these animals are not very easy to come across unless in the wild. I on the order hand am not trained to go into the jungle so when you think about it, zoos serve a good purpose.
