I'm going to claim being an average person on Steemit, like you, @wolfhart, and as such, I mean I'm totally out of the information loop when it comes to what Steemit Inc does or doesn't do and why they do or don't—but I think we can say that Steemit Inc feeling compelled to power down over 34 million SP that has been essentially sitting there for reward pool use is not a good thing.

The reasons for it might better or worsen that statement, and what comes next certainly will—does it go somewhere else, do they bring it back, and in the meantime, how does having it sitting on exchanges make it any safer?

In order for Steemit Inc's accounts to be taken over this way, there would need to be a hard fork. That means it would have to show up for consensus on the blockchain, and that 17 out of 21 top witnesses would have to say, "Yep, sounds good to me."

Aside from the fact it's Steemit Inc., the single largest driving force behind STEEM and its progress too date, taking over an account, any account, by witness consensus would doom STEEM forever.

So, while the drama is there, and the speculation is flying, muddying the waters, picking out the important bits from this is not rocket science. There is no good that could come out of such a move (forcibly taking any accounts via hard fork, let alone Steemit Inc's), and maybe slightly better 'no good' that comes from Steemit Inc's counter measures.

Yikes.
