I subconsciously thought to myself that it was either these ladies were trying to grab attention or they actually meant what they were saying, either way, something was terribly wrong somewhere!

I was invited by a friend to a group hangout of some sort and the only person I knew from this group was the friend who invited me. From this gathering, we were supposed to head somewhere else so I just agreed to tag along. The main matter behind the gathering was discussed and in the absence of any other business, the gathering was adjourned and it was time for some catching-up.

While the individuals were at it, two ladies began arguing intensely  and this drew the attention of the few people remaining. “It cannot be classified as rape when they are married” the louder girl kept arguing.  “According to the  Nigerian constitution, I'm right” and this led me to immediately do some research, apparently she was right. How did they even get there in the first place?


One of the ladies was scrolling through social media and she came across a post where another lady was crying out for help as she “raped” by her spouse against her consent. While lady one said that this wasn't a crime and the husband was well in his right to do this, lady two argued that this was outrightly inhumane and the husband should be reprimanded for this.  Without a doubt, I love drama! And playing out before me was something I classify as drama, a type of drama where I just sit back and enjoy. Of course I have my opinion on this and so did everyone there present but the two ladies were already killing it.

This scenario immediately took my mind to a song I used to enjoy when I didn't know its lyrics but ever since I came across the  music lyrics, the  song strikes as very disturbing. The song title is “Love on the Brain” by Rihanna.  This song talks about a tumultuous but passionate partnership and how one can easily  settle for pain when the pain is compensated for by something pleasurable or desirable. 

The amusing part of this entire argument was the fact that 95% of the men there-in supported the lady arguing against such  an inhumane act. Case studies and examples came up. A short clip of a popular  female Nigerian celebrity who supported the act came up and I thought “ if this was a law court, the lady arguing for it would win because she had so much evidence and backing. Heck the fricking constitution supports her bid” but what about right and wrong? 

One attribute that distinguishes us as humans is our ability to know right and wrong. This is an intricate part of our being and if we decide to ignore this because of what a piece of paper says then there is a problem. 


The argument between the ladies wasn't finalized  by the time I left the gathering and I know, I know, I was probably supposed to stay till the end to find out who emerged victorious but I already had my opinion and that was enough for me. However, I'd love to know your views on this topic, do you stand for or against the act?
