For the past 4 years I have been putting all my time and efforts into YouTube, while making a living off of it. I am the producer of world5list and Angelo is the producer for @theywillkillyou. We swapped action on our channels a long time ago and have been working together closely ever since. In addition, Angelo introduced me to Steemit a few days ago which, even though it’s still very early, has been an awesome ride so far! Overall, YouTube has been a fun adventure. Coming from a poker background, it was great to look at the graphs every time and see consistent growth. I still praise myself lucky for being able to work this kind of job, but the days that I really enjoyed doing what I’m doing are long gone and it’s all “thanks to” Youtube’s inconsistent and unfair policies. I wrote a post earlier today about the constant insults that creators and their followers have to put up with on the platform (https://steemit.com/youtube/@world5list/my-first-day-on-steemit-vs-4-poisonous-years-on-youtube). In all those years, those insults have gotten worse and worse without YouTube taking any serious action. I doubt that they ever will and based on that, none of what you are about to read should come as a surprise. I truly believe that YouTube is digging its own grave!  Instead of focusing on cleaning up their website, YouTube is coming down harder and harder on content creators without ANY regards to the so called “partnershi~~t~~p” that every channel is involved in with them. __In reality, it’s more like a sweatshop than a partnership__. Many big channels had and have been suffering for a long time and some were forced to close shop a long time ago, because of YouTube’s sad efforts to influence its audience, which @alexpmorris provided us with a good example of in: https://steemit.com/introduceyourself/@alexpmorris/youtuber-s-guide-to-re-monetizing-with-steemit-and-thank-you-to-my-first-253-subs Regardless of whether or not you share the same ideological beliefs as Alexander and the people he was running this channel with, it is insane that they basically had their right to free speech taken away by YouTube. On March 25th of this year, things took a turn for the worst. A bunch of major brands pulled millions of dollars in advertising from YouTube amid rows over extremist content on the site. YouTube was showing ads of high and low profile companies in videos that were aimed at recruiting jihadists. Something that in my wild imagination would have boiled down to : “Come to Walmart, buy yourself a nice gun and join ISIS”, “Join Verizon and use our plan to set of your car bomb!”. It’s such an __epic fail__ on their end... YouTube has been in existence for 12 years now. You would think that by now, they would have a handle on these things. Naturally, their “partners” took the hit for this unfortunate “mishap”. Earnings dropped faster than when I pull my pants down after I have been holding it for too long and countless of perfectly fine videos got demonetized. Instead of getting their shit together, they are completely overreacting, making all their so called “partners” suffer in the process. A few days ago, I posted a video about '7 Of the most heart warming good deeds' and guess what….? Yep you guessed it, it’s demonetized! Cause of course, I’m sure companies like Pepsi, AT&T and L'Oreal would not want to be associated with that kind of __REVOLTING__ content!  You can’t count on anything anymore when it comes to YouTube. Angelo and I invested a lot of money into flying out to Colombia and bringing a camera crew to interview one of Pablo Escobar’s former assassins, which we thought would make for great original content ( you can read more about that and see a part of the interview here https://steemit.com/youtube/@world5list/interviewing-a-hitman-damnable-or-not.) After what happened on March 25th and because of the way YouTube reacted to it, that's money down the drain! We are lucky enough to have been successful for a few years so we can afford to take that hit, but many others can’t.  In the past, you could at least predict which topics would have a bigger chance of getting demonetized but now, all the guidelines are out the window and it has turned into a crap shoot because YouTube opted to tighten the reins in their sweatshop, instead of getting their own shit together up in the ivory tower. More and more creators are abandoning YouTube and most of them are not even doing it to prove a point! They are doing it because they are left with no other choice. But with every disadvantage comes an advantage, so let’s hope that a lot of these former YouTubers find their way to Steemit and will help grow this awesome community!

In hindsight, @alexpmorris and I had clues it was the beginning of the end of the YT Partnership program after we attended the first Youtube Live event in Nov. 2008... I've kicked myself many times thinking I got out too early in late 2011. Now, I'm grateful we hadn't taken on more expenses to ramp up production... Btw, from 2009-11 my videos were food and beverage related... Also, glad you discovered STEEMIT, and pleasure to meet you Rene and Angelo! :)

Hey.. Welcome to steemit and thanks for sharing your story. I think I may have actually watched a couple of your videos on YouTube before.. Did you make one on boycotting the companies who are boycotting YouTube? If that was you, nice job! I appreciated that one and even shared it on my social media pages. If it wasn't you, sorry for the weird confusion, lol. It's great to see more bigger names coming over here to steemit. >YouTube has been in existence for 12 years now. You would think that by now, they would have a handle on these things. Good point! I agree and personally think there is more going on. Perhaps even a conspiracy of sorts to try to control the flow of information more. That sounds ridiculous you had a video demonetized that's about doing good heartwarming things.. I haven't watched the video yet, but I have my doubts there's anything in it worth that.. I could go into a whole rant about what I think but I know that's different than what is, and I don't wanna spam you with text. I'm also a YouTube content creator, but a small one and somewhat new and it is discouraging to have all this happen right as I'm getting much more serious about making videos/movies. But steemit has been a great relief and balancing factor in regards to that, though I am still worried about the future on YouTube.. But, for me it's totally a passion thing and I'll still do it in my free time if I can't make enough money to do it full time, just wish I could do it full time. Maybe some day! Sorta still just getting started as I mentioned. Some people claim YouTube will find a solution in time and be like it used to be, but.. I sorta have my doubts.. I think they messed things up really bad this time.. Anyways.. I followed you on here and subscribed to your channel on YouTube as well, I look forward to seeing more of your content in the future, good luck on here and in general!

My bad, I type over 100 words per minute so that's not very much to me, but I often forget that it can be a bit much, or even too much for others. And ah, okay. Thanks for the clarification and the response. It's hard to imagine YouTube going away sometimes just because of how prominent and dominant it is, however.. Who knows.. I think that YouTube will still be around for a very long time and the Ad Revenue situation will partially straighten itself out. It isn't a good feeling when you aren't compensated for what you believe to be a fair amount for your content. I have been on YouTube since 2008 and had my mental struggles with wanting to build a large following on there.

I can understand how people could become upset with the whole situation and I have had my struggles with it and also with the Steemit platform. It is is extremely hard to make a good living through content creation in general. My dream has always been to be a full time content creator and have a large following. I have never really been able to go for it because it would take years on YouTube and it still might not work out. Hopefully Steemit can put me one step closer to that.

Thanks for expressing what a lot of people are experiencing on YouTube. I produce really high quality, indie films and web series and getting a foothold is very difficult if you don't produce A LOT, and then to top it all off, now there's the risk of your content just not being advertiser friendly by standards that appear completely arbitrary. You're right, predictability appears to have gone off the deep end. I'm really looking forward to SteemQ and hope that the other decentralized models like Alexandria and LBRY are able to create new, more sustainable models for independent creators.

Very well said I have the same opinion as you. I myself have a channel on YouTube but never really put much effort on it cos the earnings were too low. Just recently I had started focusing on it again and that advertiser debacle happened. I am glad that I found about Steemit. It looks like YouTube is on a downward spiral with so many content creators looking for alternate options.

VidMe is a new one but it's kind of a joke currently. I want it to succeed but it's kind of glitchy. I can't upload or comment from mobile. The search function is lacking and 99% of the content is gaming or animation which I have nothing against but it's not really my cup of tea. Youtube isn't terrible like so many people say, keep making your content for Youtube and you'll be happy you did. That said this, Steemit that is, is an awesome new platform where I'm going to be putting a lot of my time and energy.

Youtube is definitely digging it own grave. Content has been changing drastically in the last few years. Content creators have been complaining about the strict guidelines. I think for alternative sites like Steem, it can only be good thing.

Your post is a good read. Nice to hear someone else's experience. I jumped on the Youtube Bandwagon late, and can relate to exactly what you've said. Think a lot of it has to do with advertiser pressure. I'll always be a Youtube viewer but no longer post. I am still learning on Steemit but find it a great platform.

100% agreed @world5list with you... i just quit on youtue last month after almost 4 years. they even delete one of our channel which was presenting our real production house working in Pakistan Locally. on that channel there are tele films in our local language 100% own by us. we are releasing these movies in DVD's in local market... my journey on youtube is over. the worst thing is you can't even appeal against decisions made by a f*cking robot...

Good post, but I don't think it's really fair all the flack Youtube is catching about Adpocalypse. I'm a Youtuber as well, my revenue went down 60% to 80% and it sucked, I'm not gonna lie. That said Youtube has provided us a lot of opportunities, they allow us to upload as much video as we want for free, give us a great platform to work on and bring us tons of traffic. Youtube is a business and has to make money and it does so through it's advertisers. If the adpocalypse hit you how do you think Youtube feels as your missing out on 40% of that revenue, they are missing out on 60%. Also they have fixed expenses for servers and stuff where as most Youtubers don't have a ton of out of pocket expenses for Youtubing. Nobody should ever rely on Youtube money or Adsense money for 100% of their income because even during good times things fluctuate. Every Youtuber should have multiple revenue streams selling swag, selling a course, doing coaching, Patreon, Affiliate Programs, something. You can't rely on one stream. I've also heard a lot of people saying they are censoring. They aren't censoring they let you post whatever you want, you just can't monetize everything, you can still post it though.

Check out the Library Credits cryptocoin and protocol. I have nothing to do with it personally, though I trade it on bittrex sometimes late at night. It's a new kind of media distribution cryptocurrency block chain thingie that could kill sites like Youtube and Vimeo and their ilk, with a new kind of web protocol for media sort of like steemit for video and music and docs and stuff. Worth a look if you are tired of youtube. Eventually, anyway.

What I BELIEVE is going on (but I'm far from sure), is that YouTube has built in so many checks and balances on the back end to prevent people from posting offensive or controversial content that a lot of videos are falsely getting flagged and once something gets flagged they obv. don't have the manpower to manually correct all of their own mistakes. Good read. On the one hand sad to hear Youtube has turned into this. I only see Youtube from the consumer point of view and not the creator. I never knew things were this bad.
