There are times when we are in a situation where we replace BPM drastically. From 128 to 140 for example, or from 150 to 80 bpm.

One of the most common approaches used by DJs is determining how many BPM they will use throughout the show and just playing in that range. Depending on the music being played, most house music is at 128 bpm with a variation of 123 to 130. Drums and bass above 160, dubstep and many EDMs are at 140. While hip hop varies in the 95-105 range. Changing BPM drastically is not easy to do, and risk damaging the mood dance floor. The transition should be as smooth as possible and still consider how the crowd will react.

But if you want to experiment with many genres, make your game more varied with varied BPM there are some of the following tricks that are quite common and can be used for it:

1. Cut/Slam

Crossfader shifted quickly (slam) to stop sound on deck A and replaced the sound deck B.

Some people call it Hip Hop slam, it simply is to shift the crossfader quickly to move to another deck. The sound of deck 1 is gone, the sound of the deck 2 is instantly heard. It's mostly used in many Hip Hop DJ's because it's different from a music house that has a matching beat / rhythm, hip hop has a lot of variations that do not always fit together. This technique can not be used simply, we have to experiment and memorize which song fits in the cut with what song, on which part, and so on. It is recommended to be done in a section that does not have a beat at all so it is less likely to crash / trainwreck.

If you want to use this it is better to recognize the structure of EDM songs in general where there is breakdown, build up, intro, outro, peak 1, peak 2. Cut / slam can be safely done on Breakdown.

Cut / slam can also be combined with simple scratching (baby scracth), or sample triggers such as turntable rewind sound, or even horn and subsequent tracks. Remember, this is the easiest and most dangerous trick to use when it is not in place.

2. Delay freeze (Tractor)

It was popularized by Ean Golden. The working principle is to let the first track stop with continuous delay, stop track and then run the track to two. The first delay tempo will automatically follow the second track tempo and produce a smooth transition effect. so come on check this trick:

Change effect panel affecting first track to single mode (preference> effect> FX panel mode), select efect 'delay', activate button two.

Ensure 100% dry / wet, 50% filter, 50% feedback, and rate 1/8. In addition to dry / wet you can experiment with value later to get satisfactory results.

How to use is: When the first track will be stopped, activate the effect, run the track to two, stop the first track. Part of the first song will sound like echo following the second song.

3. Using BPM Transition Track

This is the safest way to change the tempo drastically with a note you've mastered manual beatmatching. If you can create your own remixed music, you can create a remix of songs that start at a certain BPM and end up in another BPM. Another way is to get a transitional song on some DJ websites. Here is one example of a tempo transition song from 128 to 100. Useful for house songs in general are in the range 123-130 to hip hop or twerk in the range of 100 BPM.

But remember, DJ software will only detect this song as 128 or 100 and sometimes not both. We need to ignore the BPM numbers detected by the software and do beatmatching only with our ears.

4. Tempo Fader + Double / divide tempo.

Another way that can be used is to use the fader tempo plus the feature double / divide tempo. As we know, each controller generally has a fader tempo that has a range that can be set. Suppose we want to mix the song with the tempo 155 to 85. Perform the following steps:

Make sure the sync button is off, raise the first track from 155 to 160 with the fader tempo.

Press "/ 2" so that bpm will read 80 bpm.

Raise with fader tempo to 85 bpm.

Enable sync buttons run track to two.

With this technique we can start the set with 100 bpm, rise slowly to 128, up to 130, 140, 155 and then divide by two, start again from 75, back again to 100. In principle reach all the BPM range smoothly.

All the above tricks would need to be trained continuously to get good results. Conditions on the stage / booth DJ is generally too much distraction so we can forget and make mistakes. So train continuously, multiply the flying hours, transition smooth and always watch and learn the mood dance floor changes.
