Yorkshire, where men are men and sheep run scared on a weekend are aiming to prove to the world what they already know. "God's Own County" is about to become part of the global game. Often reaching the heady heights of the Olympics’ medal table, Yorkshire has formed its own FA and decided to compete in world football.

The Yorkshire International Football Association (Yifa), founded in July, will stage open trials on Sunday for the chance to represent the White Rose county in world football. England’s largest county, Yorkshire's aim is to compete in a global sub-strata of teams, such as Tibet, Darfur, and Greenland to name a few of the teams who haven’t been awarded membership of Fifa.

Their first ever game will be a local derby against the Isle of Man (IoM) national team. The IoM is part of the UK and lays between the west coast of England and the east coast of Ireland, and they are actually represented in the Commonwealth Games. 

For their first game, Yorkshire are holding trials at Hemsworth Miners Welfare FC, which is in Wakefield, about 20 miles from Leeds. To be able to compete in the trials and represent Yorkshire, there is one rule: you must be born in the county, and Yifa chairman Phil Hegarty is taking it serious.

"If Lionel Messi's mum was born in Barnsley we will be happy to take a look at him, but otherwise we are just looking for those born in Yorkshire,” said Heggarty.

So does that mean Manchester City’s full-back Kyle Walker and Leicester striker Jamie Vardy, both have a chance? They were born in Yorkshire, and surely the Yifa would welome the silky skills of the Premier League?

"The sort of football they will be playing will be proper Yorkshire football, not Premier League football, " adds Heggarty. "We don't want people diving on the floor and shouting at the referee. In our constitution, that is a disciplinary matter.”

Ah, that sounds like a Yorkshireman speaking: no nonsense and no faking. Crack on with it.

Yifa have had some serious applications from amateur footballers around the county, and they are processing the applications in an attempt to be ready for the big game against IoM. 

And players won’t just represent the white rose county on the field. After taking part in a cultural programme, the players will also have an off-pitch ambassadorial role to fulfil.

"We want them to talk about what it is to be from Yorkshire, the heritage and history of the region and what makes us that bit special, " explains Hegarty. "It will be a way of reaching out to grassroots Yorkshire people and saying: This is our football team; this is what we are about, what the region is about and why we are representing it."

To help get this project of the ground, partnerships with a local club, kit supplier and marketing agency, along with donations of time and money have made it all a possibility.

The ultimate goal for Yorkshire is to win the World Football Cup - the global tournament for international teams outside Fifa, but it seems like Yorkshire might be too late for next year’s tournament which will be held all the way down the M1 in London, although Conifa general secretary Sascha Duerkop says Yorkshire could yet make it as a late entry if they were to apply.

What about the clubs of Yorkshire, would they help out? Leeds and the two Sheffield clubs are the biggest clubs in the county, and Huddersfield are the only representation in the Premier League.

They might have bigger fish to fry, but surely allowing some of their younger players might be an option. Either way, it’s an exciting prospect for Yorkshire. The good people know how good their county is, they always shout from the rooftops when the Olympics is being staged, and now they want the world to take notice in footballing terms.
