<center> "A Forest Creek" <sub>Oil Pastel on Paper, 40cm x 30cm (15¾" x 11⅞")</sub></center> Today I'm revisiting the "forest" subject with my rendition of this little creek. I made the mistake of finishing this painting with a gloss varnish to make it look more like an old-fashioned oil painting. Unfortunately, this made it almost impossible to photograph without decent lighting equipment (which I don't have). Sorry about that. Speaking of varnish: As you may know, oil pastel never really dries. Although it dries out a little with time, it remains plyable and could be altered even years after it was painted without anyone noticing. Unfortunately, this also makes it very susceptible to smudges and scratches. Worse yet, some oil pastels may exhibit wax bloom, an ugly white haze on the surface (see photo below). Because it never dries, it is said that oil pastel couldn't be fixed and varnished. Therefore many artists shy away from oil pastel. This is unfortunate. Sennelier makes a special spray fixative for oil pastel (Sennelier D'Artigny) which is expensive at about $12.00 a can, but deals with the above mentioned problems perfectly. After a few thin coats of D'Artigny the oil pastel is dry to the touch on the surface and can be handled like any any other art, albeit not as roughly as an acrylic. Once dry, any other varnish can be applied over this for further protection without danger of delamination. By following the "fat over lean" rule from oil painting, you may never encounter the need to apply a working fixative to get out of an "oil slick". Although Sennelier D'Artigny can be used as a working fixative in a pinch, there is a better product for that: Schmincke makes an alcohol based retouching varnish (Schmincke #50_020) which can be brushed thinly over a slick spot to permit further layering in that particular area. <center> <sub>Wax bloom on a factory new Caran d'Ache Neopastel stick. _Wachsausblühung an einer fabrikneuen Caran d'Ache Neopastel Kreide._</sub></center> _Heute greife ich das Thema "Wald" mit meiner Darstellung dieses kleinen Baches wieder auf. Ich habe leider den Fehler gemacht, dieses Bild mit einem Glanzfirnis zu versehen, damit es mehr wie ein altmodisches Ölgemälde aussieht. Leider war es dadurch fast unmöglich, es ohne gutes Fotolicht (das ich nicht habe) zu fotografieren. Tut mir leid._ _Apropos Firnis: Wie Du vielleicht weißt, trocknet Ölpastell nie wirklich. Obwohl es mit der Zeit ein wenig austrocknet, bleibt es geschmeidig und kann noch Jahre nach dem Malen verändert werden, ohne dass es jemandem auffällt. Leider macht es das auch sehr anfällig für Schmierer und Kratzer. Schlimmer noch, einige Ölpastelle können Wachsausblühungen aufweisen, einen hässlichen weißen Schleier auf der Oberfläche (siehe Foto oben). Da Ölpastell niemals trocknet, heißt es immer, dass es nicht fixiert und gefirnisst werden kann. Deshalb schrecken viele Künstler vor Ölpastell zurück._ _Das ist bedauerlich. Sennelier stellt ein spezielles Sprühfixativ für Ölpastell her (Sennelier D'Artigny), das mit etwa 12,00 € pro Dose zwar teuer ist, aber die oben genannten Probleme perfekt löst. Nach einigen dünnen Schichten D'Artigny ist das Ölpastell auf der Oberfläche trocken und kann wie jedes andere Gemälde behandelt werden, wenn auch nicht so grob wie ein Acrylbild. Nach dem Trocknen kann jeder andere Firnis zum weiteren Schutz darüber aufgetragen werden, ohne dass die Gefahr der Delaminierung besteht._ _Wenn Du dich an die Regel "fett über mager" aus der Ölmalerei hältst, wirst Du vielleicht nie die Notwendigkeit sehen, ein Zwischenfixativ aufzutragen, um einen "Ölfleck" auszutrocknen. Obwohl Sennelier D'Artigny als Zwischenfixativ verwendet werden kann, gibt es dafür ein besseres Produkt: Schmincke stellt einen Alkohol-Retuschierfirnis her (Schmincke Nr. 50_020), der dünn über eine ölig-schmierige Stelle gestrichen werden kann, um den Auftrag weiterer Farbschichten in diesem Bereich zu ermöglichen._

> Deshalb schrecken viele Künstler vor Ölpastell zurück Nur de Meischder nett - der kennt sisch doo aus, wie in seiner ajene Buxetasch. Das hier sieht mir sehr nach viel Geduld aus. Aber es hat sich auf jeden Fall gelohnt. Gestern (oder vorgestern) ist ein Beckmann Selbstporträt für 20 Millionen versteigert worden. Dies bedeutet, dass in der Galerie (Auktionshaus) ein Platz frei geworden ist. Schraub zwää Hooke an de Raahme unn häng dej Kunnschd dort uff! Außerdem scheint mir der Umgang mit den Farben recht kompliziert zu sein. Da ist das Hantieren mit Tinte und Füller doch erheblich einfacher. Grüße!
