Best By Dates

I recently sent a number of exposed 120 and 620 film rolls in for developing. I've been buying expired film and using it in old, vintage cameras as a fun experiment. Sometimes it turns out well! Sometimes it turns out the way one might expect from expired film.

This looks something like an image from a dream, or like a poltergeist about to leap out of the monitor to eat you.

This one I honestly don't even know what I was trying to take a picture of.

This screams "expired." Really, it does look like it's screaming.

This next picture I actually touched up a little for some colour correction, and think it turned out neat. It rather reminds me of *Nude Descending a Staircase (No. 2)* by Marcel Duchamp (https://philamuseum.org/collection/object/51449)

This next picture turned out rather well, considering the film is over 30 years old.

These final two pictures I will admit were not taken with BW film, but they look so much better in BW that I'm leaving them like this and not showing the original, which look like crap.

This band playing in the next picture is *Chapel Street Junction*, a local blues grass band, and they are *really good*. I really could have sat and listened to them all day long.

I don't even remember which cameras these were from. I'm not sure it really matters, anyway. I'm going to keep using the old cameras, but I don't think I'm going to use expired film anymore. I want to push the cameras to their limit, which just isn't possible without good film.

Oh, the first and second ones are a bit creepy, like there's a shade in the frame, something from somewhere else, beyond the natural realm. It's spooky. 

It looks like a fun hobby though, a novel idea, but yes, I'm sure you can take much better shots with in-date film.

I remember having to take film to get developed. I remember black and white film also. Yeah, I'm *ancient!* Are you developing these yourself Victor? 

I recall coming back from the Australian F1 Grand Prix in Adelaide each year with roll after roll of film and have to pay squillions to get it developed...Then find out I got three good shots. Ah yeah, the good old days. 

These are interesting shots, the first two are somewhat spookyfied. 😊

I remember the day when drug stores had walls full of 35mm film and those large, automatic film developing machines. One hour developing was amazing at the time!

I'm not currently developing the film myself, but I do have plans to begin. I've put together a list of all the materials I'll need and have given some *strong hints* to the offspring that these items would be Very Welcome as a Father's Day gift. I even have the instructions on how to create a developing solution from coffee! I have upwards of 20 'vintage' cameras in a working state; developing the film myself will make it so much easier to test, not to mention cheaper.

Oh yes. It's $12/roll to develop; I just sent in 5 rolls, and two of them came back completely useless. Disappointing, particularly because I'm unable to determine if the issue is with the camera, the film, with me, or any combination thereof. Developing my own will let me experiment, particularly with double exposures. That will be fun.

I hope you get your Father's Day goodies! 

My grandfather had a dark room with a colour and black and white processor. He was an excellent photographer but also loved the developing aspect. I wish I had it all but it was sold on at his death.
