 [<sup>(Source)</sup>](https://blockchainjournal.news/polygon-network-experiences-outage-after-upgrade/amp/) #### Morning So yesterday Ethereum layer 2 scaling solution, Polygon network went down for extended period of 11 hours during a planned upgrade of the Heimdall node. On Thrusted Polygon team notified their users of the upgrade to one of the network three layers and consequent network downtime starting 5:50 PM UTC. But things didn't go as planned, as the upgrade caused an error rendering the network unable to achieve consensus. During the downtime, Polygonscan and Polygon Bridge went offine. On, 1:30 am UTC Polygon team issued a statement, explaining that the devs are stil working to resolve the issue, assuring that all users funds and on-chain data are safe. Meanwhile, the team deployed a hotfix in order to let the network resume block production. > We suspect there may have been a bug in the upgrade which affected consensus and caused different Heimdall validators to be on different version of the chain, thereby not reaching 2/3 Consensus. Basically, three layers constitute the Polygon network with each having its unique purpose. First layer called 'Ethereum Layer is where smart contracts run and the second Bor Layer is responsible for producing blocks. The third layer Heimdall' consists of set of proof of stake nodes helping the network reach consensus and that's where the issue lies. Polygon team has been working to permanentiy resolve the issue with the hotfix allowing the network to resume typical transactions and block production. Meanwhile, Polygon Bridge remains offline. Many unhappy users criticized the Polygonteam for the extended network outage. But to be fair, it is common to encounter bugs during the upgrades and nobody could have foreseen that.
