<strong>Scientists from the Skoltech Center for Scientific and Engineering Computing Technologies for problems with large data</strong> sets and the Design Center, production methods and materials with mathematical modeling demonstrated how erosion optimizes the shape and structure of the material being destroyed.

The real museums of such structures are the national parks of Utah, recently there appeared the first evidence that such forms can also occur on Mars.

In their article, scientists suggested looking at the phenomenon of erosion as a process of optimizing form. <strong>They succeeded in demonstrating that, under certain natural assumptions, erosion optimizes the shape of the material </strong>to be destroyed by local minimization of the energy of elastic deformation stored in the material.

The formation of columns, arches and other exotic morphologies was illustrated in numerical modeling of erosion, using the software developed in Skoltech for topological optimization.
