<strong>[EN]</strong>

I love science. This “thing” that unravels atoms and galaxies, cures once incurable diseases, and connects us virtually across fifty time zones. But along this fascination, we come to realize that there is no progress without a shadow. There is, indeed, a side of science that makes me uneasy — where its achievements lose empathy and run the risk of turning against us.

I think, for example, about the unchecked advance of biological weapons. Laboratories turning harmless microorganisms into potential agents of mass destruction. I do not agree with the ambition to control life down to the smallest detail when that means manipulating viruses or bacteria for military or intimidation purposes. Good science should heal, educate, and liberate; when it is trained to harm, it becomes antithetical to the very concept of “progress.”

The same logic applies to technologies that promise to solve everything but are used as tools of domination. When science loses its original intention of collective benefit, it becomes an instrument of control.

I also feel a certain discomfort with overspecialization. I do not question the value of knowledge, but I fear that so much detail distances us from a global understanding. When we focus on microcosms, we risk losing sight of the whole.

Often, there is a lack of dialogue between fields. Physicists don’t talk to biologists, who don’t talk to philosophers, and so on. This weakens science as a collective construction, making it segmented and, in some cases, alienated.

Along the same lines, I am disturbed by the indiscriminate use of algorithms. They filter news, choose what I see, and often reinforce my unconscious biases. Computer science creates intelligences that, instead of broadening horizons, ride on our insecurities, selling clothes, ideas, and medical diagnoses that may not even be necessary.

And here comes the question: to what extent are our desires authentic, and to what extent are they programmed by invisible authors?

Another development that does not please me is the escalation of surveillance technology. And it is not surprising that some of the greatest scientific risks come from industrial greed itself. The extraction of minerals for electric car batteries has already destroyed entire communities in rural areas of poor countries. Science made electric mobility possible, but it also sponsored environmental destruction and human violence. It is a harsh reminder: every advance has a price we pay.

These impacts are not always deeply debated. Sometimes, the shine of innovation blinds us to the pain it causes in other parts of the world.

So, yes, I question what we call progress. Science itself is not evil — it is neutral, a tool shaped by human hands. That is why I believe the real challenge lies in demanding more ethics, more dialogue, and more listening to make less impulsive decisions. Who wins? Who loses? What legacy will we leave?

I keep thinking that we need to slow down. Look around. Include other voices, not only scientists but also impacted communities, traditional peoples, and ordinary people.

It is not enough to calculate satellite trajectories; we need to learn to balance knowledge and responsibility. It is not enough to sequence genomes; we must protect the dignity of every life. And above all, it is not enough to celebrate the power of reason without loving, respecting, and caring for those who depend on it.

<strong><a id="anchorlink">[PT]</a></strong>

Eu amo a ciência.
