One of the most beautiful places in my city is the Mariano Procópio Museum (MAPRO), which is a historical gem dating back to the 19th century.

The patron of the place, Mariano Procópio Ferreira Lage, was a man of great influence and passion for arts and history. He dedicated much of his life to collecting objects and artifacts of cultural value, resulting in one of the richest collections in Brazil.

After Mariano Procópio's death in 1912, the house and collections were bequeathed to the city of Juiz de Fora. Shortly after, the residence was transformed into the museum we know today. Since then, MAPRO has been a landmark for those interested in local and national history, particularly from the time of the Brazilian Empire, as one of the largest historical collections is housed there.

Among the museum's treasures is the Villa Ferreira Lage, a house built in 1861 to accommodate Emperor Dom Pedro II and his family. The Villa is a point of interest for most visitors, offering an authentic glimpse into life in the 19th century. With its 14 rooms, some restored with original period furniture, such as the dining room where the Imperial Family gathered for meals, the house is a true time capsule.

As a journalist and interior designer, my visits to MAPRO are always fascinating experiences. This time was no different. Every detail, from the paintings to the decorative objects, revealed a rich and captivating history. The artistic skill and attention to detail were evident in each piece on display.

One of the most intriguing parts of the visit was descending into the basement of Villa Ferreira Lage. This space, used as a workspace during the residence's time, had never been opened to the public. However, in an unprecedented initiative, MAPRO decided to start allowing visits to this underground part, which sparked my curiosity.

However, upon entering the basement, I was surprised by a feeling of discomfort. I'm not sure if it was due to my claustrophobia or the heavy atmosphere of the environment (yes, I believe in such things), but I felt unwell and unable to appreciate the space as I should. I chose to leave quickly, promising myself to return on another occasion, better prepared to face my fears.

Despite this setback, my visit to the Mariano Procópio Museum was an enriching experience that I will certainly repeat many times, and I promise to share the future records here.

Um dos lugares que mais acho belo na minha cidade é o Museu Mariano Procópio (MAPRO), que é uma preciosidade histórica que remonta ao século XIX.

O patrono do local, Mariano Procópio Ferreira Lage, era um homem de grande influência e paixão pelas artes e história. Ele dedicou grande parte da vida a colecionar objetos e artefatos de valor cultural, resultando em uma das coleções mais ricas do Brasil.

Após a morte de Mariano Procópio, em 1912, a casa e coleções foram deixadas para a cidade de Juiz de Fora. Logo depois a residência foi transformada no museu que conhecemos hoje. Desde então, o MAPRO tem sido um ponto de referência para quem quer conhecer a história local e nacional, principalmente da época do Brasil Imperial, já que um dos maiores acervos históricos está no local.

Entre as preciosidades do museu está a Villa Ferreira Lage, uma casa construída em 1861 para hospedar o Imperador Dom Pedro II e sua família. A Villa é um ponto de interesse para a maioria dos visitantes, oferecendo uma visão autêntica da vida no século XIX. Com seus 14 cômodos, alguns restaurados com os móveis originais da época, como a sala de jantar onde a Família Imperial se reunia para as refeições, a casa é uma verdadeira cápsula do tempo.

Como jornalista e designer de interiores, minhas visitas ao MAPRO sempre são experiências fascinantes. Dessa vez, não poderia ser diferente. Cada detalhe, desde as pinturas até os objetos decorativos, revelava uma história rica e cativante. A habilidade artística e o cuidado com os detalhes eram evidentes em cada peça exposta.

Uma das partes mais intrigantes da visita foi a descida ao porão da Villa Ferreira Lage. Este espaço, utilizado como área de trabalho na época da residência, nunca havia sido aberto ao público. No entanto, em uma iniciativa inédita, o MAPRO decidiu iniciar as visitações dessa parte subterrânea, o que despertou minha curiosidade.

Entretanto, ao entrar no porão, fui surpreendida por uma sensação de desconforto. Não sei se foi devido à minha claustrofobia ou à atmosfera pesada do ambiente (sim, eu acredito nessas coisas), mas me senti mal e incapaz de apreciar o espaço como deveria. Optei por sair rapidamente, prometendo a mim mesma voltar em outra ocasião, mais preparada para enfrentar meus receios.

Apesar desse contratempo, minha visita ao Museu Mariano Procópio foi uma experiência enriquecedora que certamente repetirei muitas outras vezes e prometo trazer os registros aqui.
