In the Realm of Rusts and in the Heart of Salts

I can't contain my delight when I first saw this on a microscope. It looked like a cooling lava when it's actually a rust.</sub>

This post is nothing. It's just a bunch of photos taken when I was bored. I'm the type of person who never ran out of things to do, but when it's inevitable to be bored, I usually let my imagination roam around. I was trying to imagine what mundane things would look like under the microscope. I imagine the fissures, the cracks, the impurities, and the beauty that lies beyond what can be seen by the naked eye. My delight goes higher when I can verify if my imagination is near to the actual or not.

I can still remember my first @curie upvote two (2) years ago. I made a post entitled [Existence of Art Even in Mundane Places](https://steemit.com/art/@ybanezkim26/existence-of-art-in-the-most-mundane-places) and I wasn't even even thinking of having it curied. I don't have any idea yet on what are the necessary requisites to get curied. Fast forward to the present, a lot of things have transpired both in the blockchain and in the real world. But I still remained curious and bored, so photos like these ended up in my feed.

Let's start with the rusts because I think they're more colorful.

### In the Realm of Rusts ###

What's the first thing that comes to your mind when we talk about rusts? If you'll ask me, I would say that it's not good for any structure. As it's a product of a process which will render the integrity of the structure useless if not controlled or eliminated.

Although detrimental to any structure containing iron, rust and its formation process is really interesting. Understanding how rusts are formed will lead to better ways of preventing its occurrence in any iron surface.

Unlike oxides of other metals which provide protection the underlying metal, like patina of copper or aluminum oxide, rusts don't protect the iron underneath.</sub>

Corrosion is the process of metal oxide formation and occurs in most metals, but some metals exhibit passivity in which the metal oxide protects the metal underneath the surface from further corrosion.

Now let's jump to a different realm. Let's navigate into the heart of salts.

### In the Heart of Salts ###

I made a [post](https://steemit.com/appics/@ybanezkim26/alpha-kw-8-appics-im-30213) almost a week ago in which I promised to share more photos about salts under a microscope. As promised, I just combined them with the rust photos.

I guess this is at low light. The salt crystal is good at reflecting light so it appears to shine in a dark background.</sub>

Potassium iodide is has many uses. It can be used as a supplement as an iodine source. Although it can be poisonous at high dosage, it can be used as emergency treatment during high radiation exposure.

In our case, potassium iodide is used as an electrolyte in silver electroplating process. It can also be used as a cleaning solution after plating process.
